backsplash dilemma

as you can see the tile guy extended the backsplash to the door frame although there is no counter there. before i tell him to take it down i want to make sure that i really don't want it! i think it looks strange, hanging in mid-air. what do you think?

just wanted to give the end of the story. tiled down to the base trim

It looks fine since it's such a short distance from the edge of the countertop to the door frame. Be thankful you don't have a 5" gap from an abruptly ended tile, at the edge of an outlet...which would make seating the outlet plate a problem, and the door frame. Your contractor did the correct thing here.

I think it would be better to fix this now , it does look a bit unbalanced. Nice backsplash tile though!

Near the sink, I'd tile the short wall in the corner as well, and the area behind the sink if you're adding a raised wall. For the stove area, I would tile to the bottom of the hood vent or the bottom of the shelves, depending on where those are placed. If you're not going all the way to the ceiling I would not go as high as the pantry. Do you have room to add a narrow cabinet to the left of the sink? Or even a 6" filler piece? The sink looks awkward to use so far into the corner.

@snicks0513 This is the first time we've viewed your post. Nice outcome. We've worked with Susan Jablon over the years with great experience. Also, kudos for stepping out of the box on the tile selection/design (it's refreshing to see character and color which works with your other materials). Good for you for advocating for a quality install. As industry supporters of educating the consumer about quality tile installations I wonder if you would be so kind as to expand just a bit more on your experience for the benefit of others in the community? Specifically, how did you go about finding/hiring the tile contractor that performed the final work? Secondly, are you aware of what he/she did differently to achieve a quality installation? And finally (I know $ is a sensitive topic at times but so important for establishing realistic expectations), what did you pay for the installation (not tile itself) that was done professionally ? This would be the bonus follow-up that wraps this learning experience for all. Thank you and congrats on the new space.

It’s super important to tap into one of the colors in your countertop and not introduce anything new to the palette. I would eye up the soft warm gray/taupe color for sure. Also avoid glass subway tile as I will be too modern. Stick with porcelain and a more traditional 3x6 size ☺️

No end it even with the upper cabinets, and move that electrical box. Have the electrician use one box for the duplex outlet and the switch.

It does NOT look fine. At ALL. Remove the offending exta, to the exact edge of the counter TOP. That is the most visible spot in any rile install, and is where a lowly counter splash riser of four inches would end, were there one of those boring little things.: ) If an electrical duplex must move, do that as well.

Note to all: You must be PRESENT for tile install. If not present, you must write down, and write on the WALLS every single detail. Do not leave a tile installer to his own imagination no matter the excellent quality of an install , may be at the same time equally and (not so) beautifully FLAWED.

because of the issues that acroteria mentioned i realize its not so simple. thats why i am thinking of extending it down to the floor

Why was it tiled up halfway through the upper cabinets? That's the part I really don't understand...

@apaquin25 I could only guess that, somewhere, the tile over the stove is at that height and it was carried over. But, yeah, it's unusual but I've seen kitchens with floor to ceiling tile and they looked good.

@JAN MOYER One new backsplash trend is taking backsplash tile all the way above cabinets to the ceiling. This “oversize backsplash” stretches the tile from countertops to ceiling and really can be considered a wall treatment.
