Do I have a bone to pick, should I pick it, and who pays for it?
Comments (13)The reason one window in the bedroom is operable is in order to meet the code requirement for an emergency escape and rescue opening in all bedrooms. I have many times advised homeowners on the GW to not allow a builder to use the cryptic convention of using 60 to mean 72" or 6'-0" on the elevation drawings. (By the way, in my experience, 60 means 72" as silly as that seems) All window sizes should be dimensioned in rough opening feet - inches for the benefit of the framer. All windows should be specified separately for the benefit of the supplier in a Window Schedule that shows the manufacturer, model, rough opening, glass type, color, mullions, hardware, etc. Otherwise you are asking for mistakes. You might ask the GC where the horizontal mullion/sash rail is in the middle of the windows that were ordered for the front of the house. Something stinks; I think someone is making you take responsibility for their unprofessional mistakes. I not only provide clients with window schedules, I insist on reviewing the order before it is submitted which is a tedious and thankless job since all manufacturers use different cryptic conventions for their order sheets. I have never checked an order where there wasn't a mistake and some of them would have been very expensive to correct after delivery. Sometimes a window manufacturer will make a mistake with a correct order but that can be corrected at no cost to the owner. The issue here is documentation. If the correct windows were documented all errors should be corrected at no cost to the owner with no debate. I should also add that in the past 40 years I've known only one GC to order through a lumberyard/box store instead of a wholesale window supplier and the resulting mistakes in that order were the worst I've ever seen....See MoreI Think I Picked the Backsplash - How High Should it Go?
Comments (21)Check the return policy at the tile store. they'll usually take back complete boxes, especially if you set it up at the time of sale. Better to get them all at once and know that they match. Though you really should open all boxes to check that there isn't color variation that needs to be mixed in. Don't count on tiles from two shipments matching!! Even such not so colored glass. You've been having a trend, late in the game, to cluttering up that wall. I have to believe it's for a reason. Is it because you really want a burst of color and pattern? Or is it because you've been living so long with the white blankness of it all? And the white, blankness of all that snow! I think with the tile all the way up, and the variations in the tile, the small format, and the grout, there's going to be a heck of a lot of texture and interest and sparkle on that wall. Rather than cluttering up the wall, I'd suggest laying in a supply of interesting window shades that you can change with the season. You can put bright brocades up in the winter, and cool bamboo in the summer. Blonde lace in the spring and earth tone herringbone in the Fall....See MoreWhich location should I pick for my warming drawer?
Comments (4)You're right about the location by the stove, door and table. That seems perfect! I don't think you'd use it near the ovens. Too out of the way, and unless you really need to put something else in the oven, at which point you're running around the whole kitchen, anyway, you can keep pots warm in the cooling ovens, plus, they probably have a keep warm setting as well. Warming drawer in the top drawer by the stove is a great place to accumulate crepes and pancakes, fried foods and wok dishes that are done in small amounts at a time, grilled sandwiches, etc. Warming drawer near the table is a great place to keep pots or serving dishes after the plates are made up so the second helpings are warm. It's also convenient for the straggler who arrives halfway through the meal, though that's less location dependent. Warming drawer by the back door is a great place to keep warm sides that are waiting to go to the outdoor table for the grilling to be done, or to hold the grilled food for eating inside while the rest of the meal is being put together. It's also great for keeping hotdogs or pizza or whatever warm food you're feeding muddy, wet, sticky flocks of kids outside in. You can hand them warm food out the door and keep the mess outside. Plus, you're not losing an extra deep drawer to the warming drawer. Just make sure that the standard depth drawer stack you're using is the full depth that the warming drawer requires, or is adaptable to your unit....See MoreCurb shoppers...what did you kick yourself for NOT picking up?
Comments (12)A neighbors REAL brass floor lamp...the heavy kind. I walked pass it twice on my morning jaunt. Even discussed it with my walking partner who said I should take it. That afternoon, I took the car back to pick it up, and it was gone. ;( We bought a house, did some renovations, included installing some very nice, brand new, sage green carpeting in the upstairs bedrooms. The next year, we decided to sell. A few days after moving, I drove by our old house and there was all that new carpeting on the street curb! I was so shocked, it didn't occur to me to try to pick it up. What I have rescued: A white picket fence. Yes, you read that correctly. I picked up a pile of white pickets that someone had taken down from their yard. Took it back home and reassembles in my yard. I even made a matching gate. A very large painted Santa Claus Gourd. Really cute, too! Moving boxes. Found a china tea kettle in one, but took it back to the neighbor. In another box, I found my neighbor and friends decoupage wedding plaque....See Morebossyvossy
