How should I brighten up my kitchen? Part 2
Comments (16)I looked back over your pics this morning with pleasure, and I just thought of something. Can the light over the island be lowered? More light on the front of the cabinets would really make the room feel lighter. Can't tell from the pics if dropping the light puts it in the way or not. The chandelier style is the problem--there is so much metal below the bulbs that getting the bulbs where you would like them just may not work. Not a big project if it will help....See MoreHow should I brighten up my dark kitchen?
Comments (20)Get a lighter counter that has some reflective characteristics, repaint the walls with a lighter colored paint, and live with it for a while before doing the backsplash. We have medium dark cherry perimeter cabinets in our kitchen that faces SE, but there is a 10' deep front porch with an 11' roof including overhang that darkens the kitchen. It has a triple window over 7' wide and 4' high, and two 10" SunTunnels. The counters are a medium green granite. The center square island has creme painted cabinets and a medium light limestone/marble top. My walls look like they are about the same color as yours appear in your picture, and the floor is cream colored cork. The kitchen feels too dark to me. Our lower level galley kitchen has similar medium dark cherry cabinets with a light semi-shiny patterned laminate, and the paint is a lighter shade of the paint that is upstairs. The triple window 7' wide by 4' high is 24' across the room from it. This kitchen should feel darker than the one upstairs, but doesn't, no matter what time of day or night it is. Both kitchens are well lit. I am going to paint the upstairs kitchen a lighter better color that makes both the cabinets and counter top have a little more umph. If I could change to a lighter counter top in the upstairs kitchen, I would. There is no doubt in my mind that these 2 changes would make my upstairs kitchen feel lighter, based on how much lighter the lower level kitchen feels. Comments (11)I would repeat some blue and red from the art around the room. I'd add some different pillows but if you could swap out the rug for something more colorful that would add more color too. That said I do like the rug you have. I think it looks very nice with your furnishings. What's the room look like during the day? Do you get much light? If it feels 'dark' during day hours I'd consider repainting to something lighter. That will help lift the room. Maybe put a basket/bowl/tray on the coffee table for remotes or magazines/books. Maybe a plant....See MoreHow should I brighten my dining room?
Comments (34)Just experiment with some inexpensive vinyl tablecloths to find a color you like best, OR, maybe you want to paint the table? or just the table top, to bring some light into the area. The dark furniture is absorbing the light, the painted wall color is providing. You may want a different dining set? https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/gracie-oaks-ridgley-7-piece-extendable-solid-wood-pub-table-set-w001171274.html?piid=364988432 There are many options in that size of set. Painting it would be the most labor intensive, adding light colored chair seat pads and a coordinating table cloth, table runner or placemats would be easiest, or just buy a light colored set of furniture. The bonus there is, they really don't show the dust as much as the darker wood does. LOL... But a set this color, as the link above is for, ----or the table runner and chair pads below this picture, might be the best short term solution since your dining set is very nice.. https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/mother-of-pearl-beaded-36-inch-table-runner-in-ivory/5316905?skuId=67414284&poc=3298507 with this and than find some slim ivory chair pads for the chair seats. You may find other sets or styles you like, I just think Mother Of Pearl is timeless and classy, not gaudy, and would be special in your dining area on the table top.....See Morebasilsmum
