Living room help! How can I brighten up this space??
Comments (2)It's a nice room and you've done a pretty good job. A few tweaks though,,,,exchange the short plant for a taller plant, in that corner. If you can't do a taller one, then hang the one you have from the ceiling or put it on a taller, mini table. put the plant on something like this. Target..Project 62 That sectional, (which really is too big for this room) in front of that door, really closes off the room (visually and literally). if you could, at some point, you could use separate pieces, that would be great. going w/a round, open style coffee table will soften some of those square edgesTarget. a single sofa against the long wall, some colored pillows, artwork, the coffee table/bench (using one like this that's 'open' looking, gives the illusion of more space) the blue velvet chair for some accent colors,,,,this is what you need in your space. for instance, imagine if you removed that smaller end of the sofa and had something like this against that wall or this one. BTW, these colors, below, would look great in your room. Do you have any artwork? Framed pictures, tapestry, shelving,,,anything? here is a simple example that you could do. Target has cute accessories like little tables, pillows, wall decor, etc, that you could use. bring in some color w/the arrangement like they done here, for behind your sofa. the pics behind this sofa are hung a bit high, but should give you an idea of how to accessorize your room. this would also be a better table for you. It's mainly that sectional that is really making this room heavy. if you need window coverings, I keep it sleek w/some inset blinds of some sort....See MoreHow should I brighten my dining room?
Comments (34)Just experiment with some inexpensive vinyl tablecloths to find a color you like best, OR, maybe you want to paint the table? or just the table top, to bring some light into the area. The dark furniture is absorbing the light, the painted wall color is providing. You may want a different dining set? https://www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/gracie-oaks-ridgley-7-piece-extendable-solid-wood-pub-table-set-w001171274.html?piid=364988432 There are many options in that size of set. Painting it would be the most labor intensive, adding light colored chair seat pads and a coordinating table cloth, table runner or placemats would be easiest, or just buy a light colored set of furniture. The bonus there is, they really don't show the dust as much as the darker wood does. LOL... But a set this color, as the link above is for, ----or the table runner and chair pads below this picture, might be the best short term solution since your dining set is very nice.. https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/mother-of-pearl-beaded-36-inch-table-runner-in-ivory/5316905?skuId=67414284&poc=3298507 with this and than find some slim ivory chair pads for the chair seats. You may find other sets or styles you like, I just think Mother Of Pearl is timeless and classy, not gaudy, and would be special in your dining area on the table top.....See MoreHow do I brighten up this family room?
Comments (7)Too much dark wood can make a room seem dark. Maybe you could paint the TV stand and the sideboard. And yes, there is too much "stuff" on the walls. I would also not put the words on the walls, it is a dated look. The windows need some kind of treatment as they look unfinished. Sheer white or cream curtains on each side (don't cover the whole window, as it will get darker). When you paint the furniture, just paint the bases and leave the tops in the stain. Annie's Chalk Paint is what has been recommended here on Houzz, although I have never tried it myself. Supposedly, you don't even have to sand or strip the present finish. Also, the Queen Anne coffee table just doesn't seem to fit with the style of the room, and is maybe a little too large. I would look for an oval with simple legs, in keeping with the rest of the style, which seems to be a modern Craftsman. Consignment stores are a great place to look for classic furniture, and a good place to sell any furniture you want to eliminate from your decor....See MoreHi, I have no idea how to decorate my 2 story family room. Comments (3)The two stories provide airiness, and you don’t decorate the air. So unless you have some massive piece that needs that height to fit, decorate like you would any other room that was a typical ceiling height…keep it at people level and just appreciate the vastness above....See MoreYayagal
