Trying to brighten up paneled room. Should I chalk paint these pieces?
Comments (6)I would not suggest chalk painting anything. Don’t destroy those pieces. If necessary, sell them - and get some unfinished and/or cheap pieces to chalk paint, etc. or get some pieces that are more in line with your current style. And yes, a more minimal approach to the China/crystal display would be more in line with your style. I grew up in New York City, in an 8 bedroom house, built in 1910 - house was full of antiques from all over the world, some of furnishings were shipped from Italy, etc. My father was in shipping. My mother was an artist, from Australia - and she actually grew up on a farm. I say all of this to say: Unless you happen to live on a farm that is very interested in maintaining a more meager + rustic sensibility - don’t be so limited in your thinking that you would pass on and/or consider destroying quality heirloom pieces for a design trend. For I can tell you that the pieces that you have would surely be considered treasures and held in high esteem by many real farmers in actual/real farmhouses....See MoreHow should I decorate my built-ins? Comments (3)some plants would be nice. could you put an eye hook in the ceiling and do a type of hanging Pothos in the corner? you have some beautiful light, I'd have a bunch of orchids and african violets! then just bring in few items this glass vase w/blossoms would look nice. you need something w/a little height. that's why I mentioned doing the hanging plant off to one side this one is almost identical to yours, but painted...See MoreDining room refresh in progress....should I paint my chairs?
Comments (49)Thanks all, I think the mockup has really helped me to see that the chairs will look great as they are with the chartreuse fabric. It has always been one of my favorite colors, yet I never thought of it as such a beautiful complement to wood tones. But it is! Only bummer is that the upholsterer can't get to these until mid January. But the new light fixture should be here soon :) And you're right, that's a Corgi under the buffet! We have two at the moment as well as several others over the years. They are a wonderful decorating accessory :) KW, I see what you mean about the black shades and I have gone back and forth about that. When I try white shades on those lamps I somehow miss the black ones. They do create a bit of drama aroud the painting which I like. But we'll see, when the chandelier comes in I'll try switching them out again and see what I think. And the portrait is of my mom, painted in the 1920s. Her parents owned a grocery store in an artist community, and the artist and her husband were regular customers. They were short on cash, so offered to barter a portrait of my mom for groceries. I love it and thank you for asking about her. I'll check in again when other updates arrive, but for now I'm dreaming of chartreuse!!...See MoreHelp! What color should I paint my living room-dining room?
Comments (4)Since it is all so open, I would paint the same color in the kitchen, dining and living. Maybe the creamy white of your dining chairs would work throughout. If you don't want to paint the kitchen, you could bring that same color into the dining/living. Or you could take another shade from that same color strip/card and bring that into the living/dining. Other improvements: your rugs are too small, and so are your lamps. Your dining light is dated and your art is dissonant and not hung correctly. The coffee table is too large and heavy, and I would match drapes to the wall color once you figure that out. I do like your red cabinet and blue cache-pot! Have you thought about installing drown molding? How high are your walls? Here's a creamy white on walls (Navajo White) and brighter on trim (White Dove) so you can get the idea, even though this is not the style of your home....See Moresuezbell
