Colette: a tame climber?/Eden in a pot?
Comments (9)I have both Eden and White Eden in pots planted in the ground. They are doing well, going into their second year and have bloomed better than the ones in the ground without a pot. I think it might deter the voles for a longer period of time. Not sure what the deal is,but I saw one here a few years ago growing wildly beautiful in a pot, in the ground and chose to try it. So far, so good, but less than two years. Incidentally, for those who like Eden, White Eden is a must-have to combine with it. It blooms more frequently and is a gorgeous white....See MoreFlowering climber in a pot zone 6
Comments (1)I would probably use a layer of bubble wrap, either lining the barrel except for the bottom before planting or wrapped around the outside of the pot in winter. And I would use mulch on the surface. This will help reduce freeze-thaw cycles which tends to be one of the bigger problems for plants in containers in colder zones. You will want to read up on soils for containers, and know that you may need to change out the soil periodically. I would choose one that is small enough to remain within bounds (no sweet autumn clem or Betty Corning) and choose one that is hardy to zone 4 to increase the likelihood of survival....See MoreTrellis climber from a pot?
Comments (14)I was thinking the same thing as floral - the heat from the grill will not be plant friendly for any plant. For the two areas by the grill, consider a combination of flat artwork such as painted tiles and using it as hanging storage for grill tools. You could have a pot with herbs or low flowering plants for color, just not plants that will be tall enough to feel heat from the grill. (As an aside, I would be worried about the step at the edge of the outdoor kitchen because sooner or later I know I would be look at the grill and step off accidentally.) On the other side of the gate, you can plant annual vines such as Black-eyed Susan vines or scarlet runner beans, but unless you have a place that stays a bit warmer than zone 5 outdoor winter temperatures to store a large container, clematis will have a tough time surviving in a container over your winters. The combination of solidly frozen soil in the depths of winter and fall and spring freeze-thaw cycles doesn’t make most plants happy, and in my yard I have only found one plant that survives those conditions out of perhaps a dozen plants rated zone 3 and 4 hardiness that I have tried. Can we see a photo of the top of the hill site you are considering? If you can plant in the ground, that may be a good choice for clematis....See MoreColette Climber in pots (for now)?
Comments (4)If they face competition from other plants in the site you have planned for them, your idea of potting them up now and planting them when the weather cools off a bit sounds good. Be aware that containers dry out really fast in the summer, so you'll need to water them often -- especially if they are terra cotta....See Morepink rose(9b, FL )
