Thanks for the recommendation. flowergirl70ks, fascinatingly, my ZD is not a monster. I wish she would develop a monster personality. Have had her for at least 5 years and unfortunately, I've not found her to be very giving. She's in the ground and does little flowering in comparison to Eden which is in a pot and I can't keep up with her at all. I do have America too which is very pretty and undemanding. She's a quiet little princess in my garden but when she flowers she makes everyone stop in awe It's really funny. jacqueline3, excellent observation. I'm totally open to OGRs and really enjoy having them in my garden and definitely want more. If it's a one time bloomer, along side that one would be another which blooms all year, preferably. Personally, OGRs seem to have the most brilliant fragrance. Is Belle Portugaise's color a baby pink? Just looked it up and it appears to be the most delicate pink (which is a color I never seem to have enough of). And I just bought Banksie lutea and have to admit being mesmerized by the delicate yellow color. I just wish I could have those incredible blooms all year long. I bought it to cover a fence but will probably add something else next to it (a good distance between it and the new rose) so I can have flowers year round. And Fortune's Double Yellow seems really interesting. I've looked up 3 photos and all three photos show completely different coloration. Ohhhh, I wouldn't laugh at Fortuniana at all actually (and you can guess why). I have a similiar rose 'White Lady Banks' in a corner which has completely covered the back of a neighbor's house. And when it blooms, everyone takes notice. I'd love Fortuniana in the garden as it sounds like I'd be able to enjoy larger flowers all year long! Excellent suggestions! kstrong, Berries n' Cream looks enchanting! And yes, I'm on the left-coast - just a few miles from the beach. And I LOVE Rhapsody in Blue! It was given to me for xmas this past year and was the first to bloom this year. Now, admittedly, you made my eyes twitch a little with the reference that it's get 10 feet in the air. I may need to transplant it if it becomes vigorous as I'd love to take advantage of that height. I grew 'Ghislaine de Feligonde' as a short climber up a pine tree when living in north Alabama in 3 or 4 hours of morning sun. I had to prune it a lot to try to get it to climb up the pine. I think its natural form is more that of a mounding shrub than a climber, but it is easy to prune because of its multiflora canes. It had a beautiful spring flush and then bloomed a tiny bit through the summer and then a little more in the fall. It stayed pretty clean, foliage-wise, during the summers in Alabama. I grow it here in the PNW as a mounding shrub on the north side of a wall, so it is definitely shade tolerant. It blooms more all through the summer here than it did in Alabama. I am inclined to think the reason it does is because it's cooler here during the summers than it was in Alabama, but it could also be a difference in soil, sun, or clones, I am not really sure. In both places I have grown this rose it has had acid soil. It's a multiflora rambler. How do polys do for you, Kate? Just another thought - if you want a cream/white colored climber that always seems to be in bloom, Kate, take a look at 'White Cap'. It's healthy and blooms a lot although no fragrance to me. Also not the small blooms of the hybrid musks. Another thought is- a new one for me is 'Creme de la Creme'; it has only bloomed a little so far for me, but I think it will bloom more as it gets older. The cream blooms are really pretty and they smell like ripe pears to me. That was a new scent for me this summer; I am anxious to see how this one will do next year. I have cultivated many specimens of Rosa 'Eden rose 85' (Here we usually call Rosa 'Pierre de Ronsard') My garden is in an area 8/9 with not very deep frost but has fairly cold winters. Maybe your garden is colder still. In my climate (very warm and dry in winter) is a very vigorous rose bush. It reached more than five meters high. It is true what they say in relation to their poor ability to rebound. It does a great bloom in spring and maybe some loose rose during the rest of the season. But I would not call it second bloom. If your climate is not too cold it is a very good choice if you do not require it to re-grow. It is a very healthy, vigorous rose bush, its roses are very resistant to rain. The strong sun of Madrid endure it worse.

Fragrancen, I couldn't believe the troubles Bethnorcal had with valerian (Centranthus rurber). She details them in her thread just posted last night about Lessons Learned. I've found as long as you remove the seedlings of Jupiter's Beard/valerian, there are no problems. The plant in my photo is 12 years old and has never given me any trouble, nor have any of my other plants. Valerian has a tap root, but doesn't put out runners. I have removed many mature plants over the years because I'm always changing things, and never had a problem (many roses I've removed were way worse to deal with). I'm 70, not exactly a teenager, either. My close friend who gardens 2 acres at age 70, loves Jupiter's Beard, and she was the one who gave me my first plant 12 years ago. But, you are in zone 10, so you may have to be more vigilant with this plant than I have to be. Perhaps, that is why it's not available in your area. Bonnie, jasminerosesforu, is in Zone 10, I believe, and has been growing a fairly new Jupiter's Beard plant, so we need to ask her what her experiences are so far with the plant. Oh, I also have many perennials planted right in with my roses and have had very little problem with them. You just have to be observant on a regular basis. I have very few, if any, that have to be divided, either. (I'd be happy to share some of plant list). Diane
