There are three ways to get Simsalabim -- the first is at my rose society's auction, which will be on Nov 16-17 this year (I am the advertisement, lol). The second is to find the florist rose (or special order it, maybe?) through a florist and then root it yourself, which is where my original plant came from (and I believe that my plant is likely the primary source for all of them that have been obtained in the U.S. so far). The third is to get Memphis Music (of which Simsalabim is a sport) and try to force it back to something that is basically more yellow than burgandy in the striping, by continually encouraging the striped portions you like (i.e. more yellow) and cutting off the parts that you don't like. This third one is likely a very slow process and I've never seen anyone do it, but I've often wondered if it could be done. Theoretically it should be possible to do that. ForLoveOfRoses.com usually has a waitlist for Memphis Music. Simsalabim is a truly difficult rose to grow -- it is difficult to root, prone to every known rose disease and fungus and has this supremely annoying habit of trying to turn into a boring all yellow rose. To keep the stripes, you have to watch it carefully and keep cutting off everything that starts to bloom solid colored. That last point is why no commercial grower in his/her right mind would take on this rose as a product -- there would be no end to the complaints that it just "turned yellow." Not so much anymore. At first I thought it might be because I was getting older. But the fact is that they have messed with the formulas so much that candy isn't like it used to be. Many US candy companies have been bought by Canada, Lifesavers for one. Now the flavors are all wrong and even the packaging and size of them are wrong. Hershey's uses different proportions of cocoa butter these days. The center chocolate layer has been removed from the Rocky Road candy bar. UNO Bars used to have a unique someone nutty (hazelnut?) flavor. Now they are indistinguishable from a Three Musketeers. Even See's candy had restructured their product line and not for the better IMO. Most nostalgic candy are poor clones of their former selves. May appeal to those who never had the real thing but not to me. I still like gumdrops,spice drops and fruit slices. Red Vines seem to have stayed the same. Twizzlers are disgusting. Swedish Fish (the larger ones) are good. I would love to have a box of 50s/60s era Milk Duds. Back then the chocolate was softer and creamier, not the harder shiny coating they are glazed with today. So while I do eat candy more times than not it disappoints me. Generally I will just go into a candy store like Godiva or See's and buy a couple of pieces.

Here's a video link for you of someone's demonstration of an HE-impeller machine. Set the playback speed to 2X (click the gear icon). It's a comparatively small load but seems there's an appreciable amount of mechanical action happening. Watch a given shirt for a while (yellow or red for example). Twoyur, yes, I'm allergic to coconut, but the amount in Sleevendog's dry rub is probably not enough in an individual portion to give me a reaction, other than that my food allergies are getting worse with age and I'm not about to test it. It makes my tongue and mouth furry and tingly feeling, and I don't mess with things that are breathing adjacent. The problem is when there's more coconut in it than a few grains of sugar, but one can't taste it, which is why the thought of coconut sugar is shudder worthy, as is the sheer quantity of coconut product being used nowadays. It's a known allergen, and pointed out by law in food labelling requirements, but, of course, no such thing in home cooking. When I was a kid, more of us were allergic to coconut than peanuts!
