Miele DW: fix or replace

Rats: at the height of the holiday season, our Miele Excella, around 8 years old, has popped an F68 Technical Fault, which appears to be a seized/non-functioning circulation pump/motor. Online opinion suggests part alone will be up to $500, plus labor. Given that it's 8 years old, it's the perennial fix or replace decision. Any opinions?

And, if it's replace, what's the current equivalent of the fully integrated, hidden control Excella these days? Thanks!

If you have not used the dishwasher in a while it may just be stuck.

Here is how to fix

The equivalnet would be Miele Futura Lumen Series G6565SCVISF %1799.

That is ~$1100 more than fixing. Although you get new DW plus new features.

If the dishwasher is otherwise in good shape I lean repair.

But replacement is not a stupid decision either.

Good info, though would i get the "pitchfork" tool? From Miele? I'm not optimistic since we use this dishwasher daily, the only hope would be that some piece of debris is blocking the impeller and I could dislodge it. Otherwise, we'll have to make a difficult decision. Thanks!

LOL Gary, I saw that post by the person who filled that reservoir with soap. That would so not be pretty. I'm pretty sure that it's a similar style to yours. There is one long unit across the door, with two spring loaded doors. The seal on the rinse aid reservoir looks like the one you described. What I think is happening is that the rinse aid is leaking out of the bottom of the plastic unit. I'm hesitant to put anymore rinse aid in there, because it's such a total pain in the rear to get all the suds out of the DW when it gets overdosed with the rinse aid. Thanks for looking it up for me, though, much appreciated. I like your idea of putting a colored liquid into it--I might through some food coloring into some water and put it through, just to see what happens. I wish mine was still under warranty, but it's out by a good bit, even though we did have a Miele tech install it, so we got two years. I'm going to see if I can find out how the thing is attached to the door. Maybe that will give me an idea of where the problem lies. Cj

Ok, so far some things in this thread are not true. I spoke with Miele about this two months ago before I got my Diamante. The 4 year extended warranty on the Miele dishwasher is $249, not $150. (Where did you get a $150 price from?) http://www.mieleusa.com/miele_care/miele_care_indepth.asp?nav=400&snav=490&tnav=492&oT=230&benefit=88&page=2&menu_id=30 If you have a non-Miele-Authorized installer do the work, you then get the 1 year standard warranty. Within that 1 year (12 months) you can then decide to buy the Miele 4 year extended at $249, but after the 12th month it can not be purchased. If you have a Miele-Authorized installer do the work, you get the 1 year standard warranty + an extra 1 year courtesy warranty (for a total of 2 years coverage). But here's the thing....you can still buy the 4 year extended warranty ($249) but it has to be purchased by the 12th month (not by the 24th month like someone else said). That means that during the 13th-24th month, both the courtesy warranty and extended warranty run together. My delivery and installation using a Miele authorized installer was $149, which means I get the 2nd year of courtesy coverage. I have within the first 12 months to decide if I want to buy the 4 year extended warranty. If I do, that means the 2nd year (13-24th month) it is covered by the courtesy warranty and extended warranty. But then on the 25th month (and for 3 years) it is covered by the extended warranty. So in this case, I'd really be spending $249 for 3 years of extra coverage, since I'd have 1 year standard and 1 year courtesy. Hopefully you were able to understand this. If not, call Miele and have them explain it, since you can ask them questions directly.

I just spent some time on the phone w/a very nice Miele pre-sales person who checked on service people and installers in my area. I'm a little more relaxed. But, for you, I highly recommend calling Miele and making sure they address this for you. I mentioned your issue to the Miele rep I was talking to and he said Miele would want to be very helpful to you in getting this matter resolved to your satisfaction. Good Luck!!! Well, my saga continues... I went to my local dealer and looked at the Miele Crystal G5105SC.....looks great.....$1399. My dealer (who loves Miele and influenced my original Miele purchase 7 years ago) mentioned that there is a big Bosch promotion now on the SHX7ER55UC and would cost me $925. Wow, $500 less. The dealer also expressed great surprise that I was having issues with my current Miele at only 7 years, and suggested that I call Miele Customer Support and tell them about my situation. He thought they might give me some $ toward buying a new Miele model. So, this morning I called Miele, and had a rather luke-warm conversation with the tech support person. He said all he could do would be to discount the parts (only) on the repair...saving me $100 on the repair. I'm sending my husband in to look at the Bosch at lunchtime. With a $500 price difference and my current Miele experience, I think we're leaning that way. (BTW, I looked at the Bosch on Saturday, and didn't like the racks as much as the Miele (they seemed less sturdy), but I could live with them.) --DJ

Hi clinresga. Nice to see you are still with us, even if distressed.

If your Excella is built-in with a cabinet matching face, then I would certainly repair.

Otherwise, I think the factors that would influence my choice of repair or buy would be perceived risk of future failures (not zero on the new model either), state of the interior, value of your time diddling with the repair vs. economic significance to you of the added cost to buy, and timeliness of repair vs. replacement.

Futura Lumen's operational features should be checked to determine whether there were improvements (for your usage) or regressions.

Lumen does not have 19 cycles but 11.

It does not have super specialized cycles like the various China cycles, starch & cheese, various glass care cycles.

I never use those in my La Perla II. I use sensor, heavy,pots & pans,saniwash and rinse & hold.

Lumen has sensor dry,16 vs 14 place settings capacity, LED interior lights, the auto open door, more flexible baskets as well as new cycles like extra quiet and 31 minute wash & dry. My La Perla II has auto open door but I really like the idea of LED interior lights and the 3D cutlery tray.

My circulation pump went also and I was in the same dilemma, fix or new purchase. I went dishwasher shopping and looked at every brand. In the end nothing, not even the newest of Mieles could entice me. I loved the dishwasher I had, so I ordered the pump at cost of 500 dollars and my husband installed it. Its been working like a dream again.
