Exactly. I have been getting emails that look like they could be from CVS. But, it letters would be capitalized where they shouldn't be. I guess some people would see CVS and open it.

Believe it or not, we have a friend who clicks on EVERYTHING! She actually believed that her grandson was "stuck in Italy with no money" and almost wired some money. Wait for it....... he lived with her.

Sue, surely you didn't include the same clickable link that they sent you! You still have time to edit your post or delete it entirely, if so.

I've said before, scams are as old as mankind. There are enough dumb people around to fall for them, whether in the form of emails, phone calls or other methods of approach so as to make it worthwhile for the perps to continue.

Yes, I made a mistake, I copied the original so that I could word it here exactly as I got it. It has been deleted. Why is it sometimes there is no flag symbol to indicate it can be edited, or deleted?

When you are the original poster of a new thread you have one hour to edit the post then you lose the ability. If you are replying to a post you have a much longer edit time window.

A similar scam that's started up here is an email claiming you've committed some (often unspecified) traffic violation (at an unspecified location) and you will be fined some random amount of money. Of course there's a clickable link so you can (ha,ha) "review the evidence".

I've had three so far. Two are from foreign countires going by the email origin and the third is from the other side of the country. Naturally none of these places has any jurisdiction here, or would have any ability to know what any drivers here are doing, much less be able to identify them and send an email.

I guess there must be some credulous people who click on the link :-/

I got an email this morning regarding a pending bank transfer from my US Bank account. I don't have a US Bank account. And it has a link. No, I didn't open either the link or the email.

I received one this morning from Cincinnati Bell. It wasn't threatening in any way. It merely said I had a message to respond to on my account and I could "read the message" by clicking on the box that said that. Seemed plausible so I was going to do it. Then I thought to look at the address of the Cincinnati Bell sender. It was "mannysfenceco. at aol.com " So of course I knew right away it was a scam. I notified Cincinnati Bell and they had me forward the email to their "phishing" department and then immediately delete it from my mailbox. I'm glad I thought to check.

If you didn't open the message, how do you know it had a link? If you saw the link in a "mail preview pane," you should be aware that this is the same as opening the message by double clicking on it in your Inbox.

They are getting better and better. I just a few moments ago got one from bloomingdales saying my account was locked. I have ordered from them quite a few years ago and suspected it was spam, but it was so well done. the sending address was customerserviceb@oes.bloomingdales. It took me a moment to see the oes .

Have not gotten anything like this, but looks fairly "innocent" at first?!? Thinking they figure MANY people have a VISA card so odds are in their favor for that. Maybe asking for "correct" account number?? SCAM stuff is getting more and more prevalent and scary. Sister had tow credit cards that had to be cancelled and reissued within about a week of each other. One because of a mystery charge that my sister noticed on statement. Other after call from CC company... did you buy XYZ from ABC for $$$ recently?

Some scam stuff ... just don't understand how anyone could fall for them. BUT others are gettinig way too slick!

I don't understand why Houzz chooses to make everything so difficult. On GW it was all simple and easy. I admit to feeling envious when I see many of you posting photos, urls. etc.

Lindsey, I have a Mac and when my email is open, I can click once on a single email and the body of the mail is then displayed on the right. But the email is not open. I have to double click to open it. But when it is just displayed on the right, I can see if there is a link or a "click here" box.

Murraysmom, my comment was actually in response to what Littlebug had written, but based on what you've just said, you are using a preview pane to view the message. For all intents and purposes, the message has been opened.

If you are using a Mac you have a lower risk of something bad affecting your computer, but more and more malware is being written/created to affect Macs.

If that is the case, then I have no option not to open the email. Is that what you are thinking too?

Hubby and I get SO many of these scam emails it isn't funny. I am more comfortable online than Hubby is so I showed him the emails and explained how they're dangerous. He's gotten so he'll have me look at any suspicious emails before he'll open attachments.

I always have to think of my father in his 80s motoring around the Internet not knowing how vulnerable he was. He continually asked his kids and grandkids to teach him how to pay his bills online. Since we knew that was a recipe for disaster everyone always gave excuses how they didn't have time right then.

Lots of people fall for scams. We have to keep our anti-virus software updated and be super skeptical of things on the Internet.

In all email settings there's an option to display the preview pane or not. I always set it to not display because it is the same as opening the email. Check your email settings for the options.

I tend to disagree with the preview pane being the same as opening an email scenario. I agree that you can't be too careful, but as long as you don't click any links contained in the email and keep your anti virus / anti malware updated, you will likely be fine. It's just been a long time since I saw any spam that deployed itself from a preview pane.
