built-ins without the tv over the fireplace??
Comments (14)Oh that's so funny, we have the exact same floorplan. I was not open to putting the TV on the wall opposite the windows b/c then you'd have to put a couch in front of the windows and face away from the backyard, plus block the view. Definitely not putting a TV in front of the windows so that only leaves the fireplace wall. And the built-ins were already there and they take up every single inch of that wall -- no drywall at all. Our windows go all along the family room wall and then all along two of the three walls on the breakfast nook bump out (the third wall has a door to the pantry) and then it's all connected and open to the kitchen. With the way our built-ins are set up, there wouldn't be enough room for the tv on either side regardless. I like the room in the above link that has the TV in built-ins to the side of the fireplace and doors are covering it so you don't have to have it in view all the time. Another thought is raising the hearth of the fireplace. What gets me is the staggered look of the tv next to the fireplace, but not at the same level. Wouldn't want the TV super low so raising the fireplace would allow them to be more even. I don't know...just a thought. Overall, I'm ok with our TV being over the fireplace. If I were designing it, I would probably have done it differently. The mantle is higher than standard so our TV is higher too. I'd make the mantle lower if I could have. Then the TV could be a little lower as well....See MoreTo swivel or not to swivel, that is the bar stool question...
Comments (36)Thanks so much for the feedback, everyone. It is interesting how different everyone's experience is with these stools.ie. some have problems with the swivel, or swivel return, others do not! I wonder if some swivels are "stiffer" than others and don't swing around so much? I love your barstool, buel. (I love how when I moused over the photo, I could find out exactly what it was and where you bought it!I just checked- they aren't carrying it anymore.) Shar-az- what a good idea to put a clear bumper on the stool! I actually called my granite company today to ask if they have had problems with people chipping the granite edge with a counter stool--they said they have never had a customer call to ask for one to be repaired, at least. Jterrilynn- I like your idea of a dark leather or vinyl seat. I never thought about making it easier to slide off; I was just thinking about color and ease of cleaning. My first pick was really this stool which has a brown vinyl seat-- I just had a bit of sticker shock when I put 4 of them in my cart (with tax it is close to $600 and I still need to buy another two more bar-height ones for the dining room!) Then I started questioning the whole swivel thing. It is too expensive to make a mistake. I think now I may just go ahead and bit the bullet and pay the money. I was running around all day today looking at bar stools! What do you all think of this one? My cabinets are a honey-spice maple, with a light colored granite, so it will be a contrast. Comments (9)I was glad to see this thread because it was something that I had not considered. I never intended to have a stone top because the used kitchen I bought came with a butcher block top. Well, we don't think we are going to like the wood, even after it is re-sanded. Plus, we dropped it and it split in two. I imagine it can be repaired (it is after all, glued together wood in the first place) but we are now looking at stone or porcelain. When I read that swiveling stools have chipped the edges of islands, I was relieved that the counter stools I got on Craigslist are completely upholstered and cushioned, front and back. I think that this will solve the problem for me, and I imagine it would work for a lot of you. Those parsons chair type stools should also work....See MoreDated oak kitchen - options for makeover without ripping it out?
Comments (28)Thats a very nice kitchen. I wouldn't get sucked into that paint everything white that everyone is saying now. Realize this - once you paint it white, you can't get that wood back very easily. Those cabinets look like maple though they could be oak. Are they high quality cabinets? You can tell quite easily - are the drawers dove tailed? If you look under the cabinets on the wall - look at the edges - are they particle board, plywood or solid wood. I think the kitchen is fine. Some decluttering, paint the walls, change the window treatments and leave it alone. There is nothing wrong with it. Traditional never goes out of style. Save your money....See MoreLars/J.
