Need help with this boring, boring space...pics
Comments (8)I think it is entirely rational to plant in that area, rather than using containers... two words: root zone. The ground can offer so much more nourishment, moisture, and space to plants than a container can (even if you are technically borrowing it...). Seeds are a good way to start, but also, when I mail order clematis I get them in a two-inch plug size. They bulk up nicely in time. Annual vines bought in small pots could also be squished in there and would grow over the space in a season. What I would spend some money on is nice pieces of trellis to enable the vines to get up the fence to the lattice part. Or you could just string fishing line; that's a taste issue. It should be noted that vines will technically leave the ground area empty, so a ground cover, annual or perennial, is a good idea. Then you wouldn't need containers, although if like me you have a pathological need to buy them, they could still be accommodated with ground cover peeping out in between. Just don't plant anything your neighbours would consider noxious. Hanging baskets, also a good idea. KarinL...See MoreSolutions for the Fish-Bowl Effect?
Comments (5)I am not a pro, and I know very little about dogs. I'm assuming you need a lot of fenced space for the dogs. How would it be to begin the fence at the pillar on the front porch? Run it straight out to the street (parallel to the driveway) and then around the corner. That would give you quite a bit of fenced yard, yet leave the area by the house open so the house wouldn't look quite so unwelcoming to passers-by. If the change from fence-and-hedge on the right to unfenced-lawn by the driveway is too stark, you could extend the picket fence (but not the hedge) to the driveway (or perhaps almost to the driveway). Make that fence lower than the fence on the right. The two parts of the yard would be unified by the fence. Another consideration in not fencing along the driveway is space needed for people getting out of cars, car doors open wide, and piles of winter snow. You could give the west side of the driveway the same treatment as the east side (fence along the sidewalk, but probably with a hedge for privacy, and no fence along the driveway). However, the lack of a continuous fence there would make it a no-dog area, which might not fit in with your plans. I think a really tall hedge would look too unfriendly. But I like reyesuela's idea of having occasional taller shrubs in the hedge; perhaps even a very small tree or two. Makes it seem less like a Wall and more like landscape maybe. Re. the west patio, do you know if your dogs would be likely to view a patch of gravel as an invitation to dig? You can bypass that possibility as well as the instability of loose rock by building a deck a single step above the ground....See MoreZucchini - every assailant except bores.

Comments (18)Hello Everyone, Thanks for the notes. Well we are just finishing day 17 (Friday October 7) of all this. My little guy is still alive and seems to be on a very slow recovery. Although just how far he will come is still a mystery. I did the full 7 day cycle of Melafix and Pimafix that ended last weekend. I did a 60% water change on Sunday night,as suggested with the medication. Up till this point he had spent most of his time on his side and slowly moving the odd time. Breathing had varied between slow and rythmic to gasping and full body lunges. As the water emptied suddenly my guy flipped over and started swimming around upright like nothing was wrong. I replaced about 70 percent of the removed water as I had talked to a store earlier who had mentioned a last ditch effort would be to lower 80% of the water in case the weight of the water above was to much for him right now.But since I use an undergravel filter and a HOB filter if the water was that low I would have no filtration at all. So I filled the water up to the intake of my HOB filter only to help him at least a bit. Over the last week he has moved around quite a bit. But when he is resting he is fully upside down. He will swim both right side up and upside down then rest for a while. I am hoping this is a good sign. He skin is fully healed now and his fins are fine. All I can do is wait and watch. Unfortunately sometime in the next week I will have to move him again as I am going into my new place now. Hope everyone has a great weekend and for those Canuks out there, Happy Thanksgiving.
