Water Hyacinth Fatal to Koi?! Taro too?
Comments (9)I realise this thread is old but would like to tell you about my experience on the weekend with water iris and koi. We cleaned out our very large pond on the weekend. Everything was removed, all 14 koi safely transferred into another container, all water iris's were broken up, repotted with new soil mix (from our supplier) and cut back for new growth to start everything off fresh again. Water was balanced and left to circulate through the filter for 2 hours. Fish returned to their home to explore. Next morning all 14 fish were dead :( on googling I have now found that the sap from the water iris is toxic. Very hard and expensive lesson for us to learn. I have spoken to our koi supplier and they were unaware of this problem. While I had bought 5 new fish on Sunday the other 9 were large koi that we had had for years :(...See MoreBamboo recommendation
Comments (3)Squinn- When you say you want to plant a bamboo behind "it," I'm assuming you behind the koi pond, but inside the greenhouse. Also, what are the winter conditions that the bamboo will have to deal with in your Zone, presuming it's inside the greenhouse?...See MoreHAVE: Have Hostas, want parrot's feather or anacharis

Comments (4)We have moved the Koi from the old pond into the new, leaving our goldfish, shubs, comets etc in the original pond. We will be adding some new Koi next year. A place we have found in Derby does a 'show n grow' each year. They're just off to select fish from Japan, along with other stock they get 100 of one type of koi which goes out to club members at cost price. We'll be trying our hand at two of thoses I think. Be good to learn and compare how the fish do in so many different pond set ups. We'll not be putting any plants in the Koi pond, it's 6 ft 7" deep, with smooth vertical walls. No foothold for the heron apparently! I'm very lucky to have the room to have both types of pond. I'd be loath to lose my toads and frogs and plants....See Moreccoombs1
