At least there is a sufficient amount of usable toilet paper within reach. I don't mind being the one to put it on the holder, because there is a 50/50 chance my son would put it on the wrong roll direction, and I would have to redo it anyway. Now if the roll is out, or even close, and the in-room replacement rolls are depleted, there are going to be words.

I remember it well....and now that I have my very own 'room', it still can run out....nd my 'room' is in the furtherest reaches of the house.

This is why I have the easy hook style tp holder it's so easy they actually usually do put it on the holder. Those kind require thinking and steps .

LOL, terri........I replaced all my tissue holders with the easy hook type, too.

I don't understand why this is an issue with the younger generation. They also don't like to make their beds! A friend told me her daughter (who is 30) told her that making the bed is a generational thing!

There was a really funny video by a dad where he created a tutorial for how to put replaced the toilet paper for his kids.

When I was a kid more than half a century ago, one of the house rules was that whomever finished the roll replaced it, or if it was too low to have another at the ready.

My great grandson, who is the only other person living with me, has told me after using the facilities that he replaced the roll for ME, without any prompting LOL.

Sometimes, I'll set a new roll there if I don't have time to switch it out. I don't mind someone else setting the new roll there so much as long as it hasn't been started. If the new roll has been started, it's war. Lol!

The roll goes over, always over. Why some people hang it under is honestly beyond me. :)

When the sheets come from under, they are easier to tear off.

oh that easy hook don't mean a thing in my house...I am the ONLY one who replaces the roll....and when I do hand a roll through the door to one of the kids, guess which way they place that roll!!! Never fails.

I do what bossyvossy does. And if you ever had kittens in the house, you'd hang it so the paper comes off under. :)

I have my own bathroom, but when I open the coffee canister in the morning, to find that someone used the last of the coffee I ground, without grinding more beans ... I have the same reaction.

This is one of those household 'irks', like leaving the top off the toothpaste or putting an empty carton back in the cupboard or refrigerator.

UPS just delivered my 30 rolls of Northern 3-ply, 4.5" wide ordered from Costco after local warehouse stopped stocking it. (I was just wondering how much all-male households save on TP... This was $25, delivered.)

That picture reminded me of an episode of Mad About You. It opened with Paul Reiser sprawled on the couch watching TV. Helen Hunt exits the bathroom with a roll of TP and the metal tube in her hand. Without saying a word she stoops over in front of Paul and inserts the paper over the tube then walks back to the bathroom as he's saying, totally perplexed, "what? what?"

I'm not particular about it being over or under, as long as it's on there.

There may be differences of opinion but there's no controversy here between right and wrong. Anyone who thinks there is, is simply misinformed, or worse, uninformed.

Spooling out from the top is correct, while putting it on to feed from underneath is wrong and an affront to civilization. If others in your household have trouble grasping this simple and obvious approach, there are TP holders that have a vertical spindle so that the roll can be dropped down on to it to spin on a vertical axis. It's a pity to have to resort to one of these but it is a choice.

LOL! My husbands sister had a poodle when he was 8 years old that strew the house with TP if it wasn't hung backwards. Thankfully we use separate bathrooms so he can have it his way and I can have it over :-)

Talk about first world problems. Is this really even an issue? As long as it is there, I don't care!

You hang it under if you have cats or babies that like to play with it - it's a lot harder to roll off that way. Personally either way is okay with me

I'm totally convinced that the direction matters. I know it's sexist, but generally I think popular opinion MIGHT be that, in a HS, a boys' bathroom might be nastier than a girls'?!? Though I have NO experience with boys' bathroom, have noticed that many times the girls' room looks like a TP factory exploded?? Good sized hunks of TP all over the floor. IF paper is on "wrong" (going over the back), it can often tend to over-roll and pile up on the floor. No HS girl is going to pick it up off floor and use it (totally understandable) but they also won't do anything about it. My theory is, they step on offending piece on floor, rip it off to new pristine stuff and just leave stuff on floor... on the floor.

TP rolls *over* at our house. When a roll is nearly spent, I put a new roll on the spindle and set the nearly spent roll on top.

(I don't think I've ever seen a roll of paper towels hung to dispense from the rear.)

I find the angle the cats don't like, and use that. Over -- cats get a great grip and what a mess. I wish I'd taken photos!!! Bathroom, hallway... So.. I use UNDER.

If you don't have cats (or even dogs) use whatever the heck direction you like, or what your personal astrological moment points you at. I'm bright enough to figure out what to do if I visit you.

As for brand, I prefer Marcal. It is recycled (NOT from TP), and it is far better quality than Seventh Generation, also recycled, but of marginal quality.

For me, it would be the lemonade or OJ container with a mouthful left in there.

From a slightly earlier comment on this thread: my paper towel holder stands upright. Vertical. Should I dispense from left to right, or right to left? And does this change if I am in the Southern or Northern hemisphere? Drains drain down differently depending on hemisphere, after all? (First World sarcasm sliding in here...)

klseiverd, if anyone thinks a men's room is nastier than a women's room they've clearly never cleaned them. Back in my early work years I had to clean the restroom (being the last hired the job flowed downhill to me) and the girl who trained me asked me if I ever cleaned public bathrooms before. No I hadn't. She said "Brace yourself, women are PIGS!" She couldn't have said it better. I was wondering if I needed to go get a shovel. And from what most females comment when we're in public together, things haven't changed. I take it peoples' true personalities come out in public?

I've had several cats over the years. I know a lot of people who have cats and have had cats/kittens in the past. I never had issues of a cat with toilet paper. I don't know anyone who has. Seems to me anyone who has a cat so desperate it goes to the bathroom to make a toy out of toilet paper isn't getting the exercise the owner should give it, and probably being denied a simple toy. Sounds to me more like an excuse to hang toilet paper wrong and blaming innocent felines.

So why do people hang it the wrong way, anyway? I suspect it comes from the days when those roll paper notepads were fashionable. People got used to hanging the paper in there and couldn't tell the difference between it and a toilet paper roll. Possibly confirmed to them by printing calculators.

Back when I used to use Charmin and getting frustrated with their tiny number of sheets, I put in a second dispenser. Now that I switched to the 1000 sheet Scott (or comparable) rolls, 2000 sheets lasts a long time.

I hang it down the back and always have - it was the correct way in our house. Not sure it matters, since the roll is still near, but I hate having the loose end hanging close to the open toilet when men are doing their thing - ew.

I also hang paper towels the same way - down the back - because if the towels hang down in front and extend from the roll, they block off an area of the counter below the holder.

pekemom -- I agree with 'living it up' on 'small things'. Why *not* eliminate a constant irritant, especially when it costs so little to do so?

Olychick -- A perfect reason to drape paper toweling from the back! (It's been a while since I had an under-cabinet-mounted dispenser.)

I don't care whether the next panel is coming off of the front or the back, though I somewhat prefer the back ... and it looks to me as though that is the style in the original pic.

As for the panels feeding at the front, and there may be splash from the men if the toilet is too close ... train your guys that civilized men sit down to pee.

In a discussion at a friend's house a number of years ago, a lady with a husband and a couple of nearly grown boys and a couple of girls in similar age bracket said that she'd told her guys ... that if they chose to stand to pee - they cleaned the bathroom!

The problem that I have with many of the holders that have a bump at each end just a bit smaller than the tube of the roll, but a thin bar in between, is that a number of the rolls are narrower than they used to be, and the bump at the one end doesn't hold them correctly, so the roll sits askew, and tends to bind when a person tries to pull some paper off of the roll.

I remember a discussion here a few years ago when that narrower roll practice began, people were complaining that some stores (I think a major one being Mal Wart) were selling the new narrower roll, and they didn't like it.

If I recall correctly, someone suggested that such rolls appeared to be intended for tight-assed people.

When I was visiting that receptacle a couple of dozen times and more per day, back there in the winter ... I became quite concerned about using the paper carefully ... and wisely ... and even learned how to reuse it (should anyone have any interest in such a subject).

By the way - do you remember my story several years ago about how some people had learned how to recycle toilet paper ... and then came on to say that I'd used the wrong terminolgy, that "recycling" necessitated some reprocessing, and the situation to which I'd referred was actually "re-use", as no "reprocessing" was involved (unless one called re-rolling a strip of the paper back on the roll as "re-processing")? It had been a different kind of "re-use" that time, though.
