A scent of snow ?

One day ago we enjoyed over 60 degree temps in our shirtsleeves.

The wind began to switch........

And this is what we woke up to this morning:

I always know when it has snowed when I wake up because the light coming in through my window is a different colour from the usual.

I am of the opinion that while snow looks very pretty when it has just fallen, I could really do without it.

I can remember too many mornings, when I was in elementary and secondary school, of
having to dig myself out of the house to get to school (actually, I would usually just hurl myself into the drift covering the door and burrow through). Then there was
that one winter when I was living in a basement apartment with snow
covering all the windows for nearly two months, and had to dig myself in
or out at least once a week. It was enough to make anyone hate snow.

Wow, that looks like a lot of snow for overnight! But what do I know - I live in Florida! Yesterday afternoon I could hear the neighbors' grandkids in their pool and it was 63 degrees outside. I was wearing my wool socks!

Very pretty, but I'm not ready! Our temperature dropped 40 degrees from 81 F. last Friday through Saturday, and this morning it was 23 F.

Hello, Brandyray. Wow! I was thinking that s-o-m-e winter damage could cause some browning of leaves but I wonder if it could cause A-L-L of the damage that you describe. Scented Snow is hardy to Zone 7; was your last winter a Zone 6-kind of a winter? It is not clear just how bad the shrub is; could you post a picture? At some point, an almost dead plant cannot be saved and maybe a photo can help determine that. It would help to see the shrub in one picture and then top/bottom views of the affected leaves. I would hesitate to move a stressed plant and would instead try to correct the problem(s) that may have resulted in this. Some examples of problems... Is this one plant getting too much water in that location? Too much water can cause root rot. You can test the soil with a finger regularly to see if the spot feels wet. I f it regularly feels wet, you may want to determine why and take appropriate action. Other possibilities... did it dry out during winter? Camellias are dormant in winter but they do need some water... a lesson I learned when my sprinkler system was turned off and kept off during a dry winter. I would also discontinue all forms of fertilizing by July-ish and would not use high-nitrogen fertilizers that could keep the plant in growth-mode just a winter sets in. Some Miracle-gro formulations can be 30% nitrogen. Being in growth-mode as winter starts would make the plant susceptible to winter damage. Also, inspect the shrub for pests like scale and for fungal infections such as camellia dieback. In the mean time, maintain the soil moist -not wet- as best as you can. If unsure of when to water, insert a finger into the soil to a depth of 4" and water if the finger feels almost dry or dry. Do not water if it feels moist or wet. Maintain 3-4" of mulch up to the drip line ( about 6-12" further away of the area is windy). Do not fertilize while stressed. Liquid seaweed, liquid fish and coffee grounds are weak fertilizers and you could add a little of them. When the plant recovers, you can fertilize with cottonseed meal, etc. I would also prune obviously dead or dried out areas. See the link below for more information. Good luck, Brandyray. Those sound nice. I have a few scented ger. also. A few from GW trades and a couple from Seminole Springs Nursery. They also sell OGR roses and do mail order too. They are located way out in the country in Eustis FL. I got a chocolate peppermint geranium there. I saw and smelled a "pine" scented geranium in Sarasota but it didn't make me buy it. Is Ivory Snow detergent still made in powder form? I've only seen it in liquid form in recent years. When my DC were babies (eons ago, LOL), I loved washing their diapers and baby clothes/blankets, etc., in Ivory Snow. I used white vinegar instead of fabric softener, and they were always wonderfully clean and soft.

This is typical from a snow storm in New York state Southern Tier.

Central New York state got close to 18 inches or more.

It was just flurrying today in central CT, but there was a good bit of snow further north of me. Too soon!

There's been snow falls in Scotland, but here in SW England the Jet Stream has swept across the country bringing flooding and high winds . . . and in our case our newly re-fixed roof has leaked in places it hadn't leaked before.

Donna, over here 63 is considered pleasantly warm and as Carolyn knows it almost never reaches the 80's. ;-)

Msmeow, I wear bed socks even in 80F heat, my feet feel cold and keep me awake.

I agree with Netla, snow looks pretty but I am quite happy not to live with it now.

Haha, Vee - I would not recommend visiting Florida in the summer time! If we're lucky it gets DOWN to 80 at night in July and August! Many days are in the upper 90s and the humidity makes it feel 5-10 degrees hotter. Love it! :)

I used to live in NW PA and got used to the Lake Effect snows, which are really quite specific to that part of the US. Lots of overcast, gloomy days all year 'round.

Here in Charleston, a few days ago it was close to 80 and balmy. Then, temps suddenly plummeted and we got our first frost. But, thankfully, Turkey Day will be 79, sunny and breezy. Perfect weather, IMHO.

Yoyobon, it snowed heavily all around us here in Central NY, with some places getting close to 3 feet of snow. Luckily for me, the lake effect bands split and went north and south so we only got a few inches. The schools were all closed anyway because many of the students live in areas where there was significant snowfall. The meteorologists are predicting a snowier winter for us this year than last year. I think we're supposed to get somewhere between 90-120 inches for the season. I wouldn't be surprised to find your area getting it just as bad.

Woodnymph, I had never heard of lake effect snow until I moved to NY several years ago. I have a very healthy respect for it now. When I moved from the Finger Lakes Region to Central NY I thought I had left the lake effect snows behind but I was wrong;. The bands moving across Lake Ontario reach here too!

Lake effect snow is serious ,,,,,especially around Syracuse NY !

I can be driving on clear, snowless highway and then instantly find myself in deep snow and whiteout conditions as I near that city. It is not to be taken lightly.

Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo have a sort of contest each year to see which city receives the highest snowfall. Whichever one does, wins the "golden" snowball. Utica really should be in that contest as well as that area also gets hit with a lot of snow but it is a much smaller city that the others so it isn't counted.
