Changing color of exterior brick?
Comments (13)Hey Docbotanus! This is a super old post, I hope you figured your situation out! I only have a yellow/pink brick, so it is not AS urgent to dye as an orange ;) Why not just order the dye from NawKaw and do it yourself, are you still having reservations? I too think the do-it-yourself youtube videos make it sound SUPER reasonable to do...just take your time (rushing or half-assing will lead to drips and mistakes), and go in varying patterns as suggested in the video. You can do one round around the house in patterns with one color mix, then make a bit darker or lighter and do a second round, then third, to vary the color variety. Pete Sloane's advice seems spot on, dye is permanent, I would not think otherwise, so definitely a process to consider (VS REPLACEMENT!!! Oye, that is worse, and WAY more expensive). The product will cost you, what, $400? and the time is just experience and fulfilling completing a project, which is very rewarding. I say go for it, I am eager to embark on the same dream! My hubs thinks I am nuts, too, spouses can be so encouraging, lol....See MorePaint colour to go with/minimize hideous tile colour
Comments (16)Thanks all! There is very little natural light in the room. There is a typical tiny basement window at the ceiling, with a southern exposure, so it does get daylight for a good portion of the day. There is a flourescent light in there now. I've changed light fixtures many times, but I don't know if the flourescent thing adds difficulty or if it's still a simple, black to black, white to white, green to ground. If it's that simple, I can switch it out right away. Or as soon as I find the extra fixtures my Mom had that she sent me. LOL There is a box of the trim tiles in the furnace room that the previous owners left there, so I'll maybe take those over to the paint store and look at a medium blue and a dark tan. I hesitate to go too dark, but it just might work! Thanks for the idea to paint the cabinet too. The sink is one of those yellowy clamshell shaped things with black pits everywhere. It works, but I don't mind spending a few bucks fixing that up. Unfortunately our Re-store is sadly lacking in quality items. Or maybe I don't go often enough. I'll check that out too....See MoreIn need of color ideas to paint brick and new siding
Comments (6)I'd paint it. As Rachel listed, Romabio is an appropriate paint/stain/lime wash for bricks. do not use regular paint on bricks. do not power wash them either. before and after, Romabio lime wash You don't have a ton of siding. I'd get new siding rather than paint that. (if you can even paint it) what color is your roof? that's going to somewhat dictate the colors you can choose. you can't go wrong with white, cream, a lime wash, or other neutrals. You could do a white brick, a darker color siding (lets say, navy or charcoal), white trim and a bright color for the front door....See MoreFront Elevations - Which exterior finish: some brick, more brick...?
Comments (29)Would do either brick or stone over the foundation only and siding above that. Use only one kind of material in the gables -- perhaps horizontal siding the rather than vertical. Would not put any hip roof on any part of the house. Stay with gables and steep slopes with straight edges at the bottom of the slopes all around for your gutter. Would change the roof to have one and only one ridge line height -- the higher height -- and decrease the number of gables to be one facing the left end of your home, one facing right end of your home and one facing the end of the angle of the garage -- not over where the garage doors are now shown . Would not cut corners in the cost to cut corners and create angles in the garage. Would keep the walls leading from the home to the outer left edge of the garage straight all the way to the end and would seriously consider putting two garage doors the same size in that angled end of the garage even if that means adding and additional few feet to the garage length -- definitely would not pour the front yard in concrete for a driveway. Extend the width of the forward facing gable over the front entry to cover both the front entry and those two larger longer/taller windows to the right of it. Extend the depth of the forward facing gable to cover a porch at least 6' deep. Where you currently have windows in the upstairs in gables, the slopes of which will take away room from your upstairs rooms, add dormers there rather than full gables enabling you to have more/larger windows and more room / headroom in the upstairs rooms. There are different kinds of dormers with different shaped roofs. https://www.google.com/search?q=dormers&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiHsdacuJPlAhVJmuAKHZ9AB4sQ_AUIESgB&biw=1328&bih=617#spf=1570770556130...See MoreRelated Professionals
