Newbie Here: Can We Talk About Raised Bed Planters?
Comments (5)Hi Lynn, love your adobe look walls in the front and your view in the back is wonderful. I'm glad you plan on preserving your view in the back and think it's great that you're thinking of water conservation. Since you're close to Santa Fe I hope you've been to High Country Gardens/Santa Fe greenhouse. I've been buying plants mail order from them for fifteen years and I understand they have some great waterwise landscaping at thier store in Santa Fe. In this month(Sept.) issue of Sunset magazine there is a Santa Fe landscape with adobe walls and a planter against the wall like what you are talking about. It does have a lot of plants in the ground also but it is a great backyard landscape by Wilder Landscaping. Your idea of all raised planters sounds very attractive and ambitious. I know you where conscerned about the heat situation with all that masonry. All your walls would act as a heat sink collecting the warmth during the day and then radiating it out at night. You would have cooler temperatures in the mornings from the walls and warmer temperatures at night. About the planters using less water I can't get around this idea. Planters because they are exposed to the hot summer air on the sides as well as from overhead actually heat up the soil more than in ground plantings. This makes them use more water not less. Of course you are talking about other issues too such as ease of planting and not having to deal with your rocky soil. Mulch is a great way to help keep soil cooler and use less water, rock mulch for more deserty type plants and organic mulch for others. And your shade trees will really cool things off for you too. If you use plants well adapted to your area you could really keep your water use down and not have to feel like you need all the planters....See MoreCan we talk hair products?
Comments (14)paintchips, I feel your pain! My hair is sort of in-between right now. I went from a bob-type style to a very short cut, then decided to grow it out a little bit, but not a bob. This has all taken place in the past year or so. Now that it's getting warm here in New England and I'm thinking I want "easy" for summer, I'm going back to my hairdresser next week and having her cut it super-short again. I think my hair needs to be short, because it has absolutely no wave or body. It's just stick-straight, and especially (because of the humidity near the water?) where our summer cottage is, where we spend a lot of time, it will NOT do anything I want it to. I also think the "inbetween" style I have now is not stylish and at my age (44) my main goal with my hairstyle is to make me look cute, a little bit funky, and a little bit younger! NOT like a middle-aged mom. As far as products, I also love Bumble & Bumble products -- all of them -- and as is true for a lot of the more expensive products, you only need a small amount. I also have an Aveeda Pure Abundance shampoo that I love. I switch around a lot because I, too, am always looking for the miracle product. I do love the B&B hair spray because it holds without being too sticky or stiff....See MoreCan we talk about towels?
Comments (32)The longer the cotton fiber, the more lasting the cloth. A longer twisted cotton fiber can't shed off pieces as easily as a short one does. These fibers make less lint and so don't get thin as fast. The best is linen followed by the cottons- Egyptian and then prima. All are wonderful and soft. I prefer linen but linen towels are not loopy they are flat like heavy tablecloths. Linen is naturally antibacterial and absorbs more water than cotton and dries in the air faster than cotton. A lower thread count sheet is cooler in summer than a higher thread count sheet. Try it and see. A lower thread count sheet lasts fine if the fibers are long. My linen 250 sheets have 20 years at least and are so soft now. I don't bleach them. If you want to whiten discolored linen try oxyclean. But for occasional brightening, lay them out over grass for a day in summer. Someone said something about chlorophyll.....I don't know why it works for both linen and cotton. Chlorine bleach is a killer. It breaks down fibers so they shed off lint. They become thin and brittle and eventually tear apart. Did you know that material wealth used to mean the linens a household had? Women spent years as children spinning and weaving and decorating sheets, towels and other household textiles to go into dowry chests. They were meant to last. The softest and longest lasting was linen. Ancient Egyptian linen still survives. Linen is the choice fiber for both the Vatican and the White House. Cotton is American because we don't have the right climate for flax like Belgium and Ireland. Still the looms that handle the finest thinnest cotton thread are in Switzerland and Italy I think. The beautiful cotton men's shirts are all woven there. I put traditional cotton loop towels out for guests because that's what they expect, but I use my old soft linen for myself. I sew it the size I want and it's going to outlast me....See MoreCan we talk about my range hood?
Comments (13)I foresee cutting out that part of the soffit and making my own rangehood in the future. If I do that, can I do what I mentioned about making narrower doors and having a bit of cabinet face exposed? Would that look unbalanced? My inspiration photo has inset cabinets so I can't tell if mine would look weird......See Moreartemis_ma
