As promised a better pic of Double Scots White
Comments (4)What a charmer of a rose. Scots roses are almost never seen here and I love their dainty leaves and somewhat wild quality. Good for you for turning a few sticks into a thing of beauty. Ingrid...See MoreKalanchoe flower
Comments (8)While it just seems to be K. pinnata, it came to me from Denmark as K. 'Magic Bells'. The ones I've grown as K. pinnata have simple leaves, or develop 5 pinnate leaves; K. 'Magic Bells' has simple leaves or 3 pinnate, but not sure if this a 'real' difference. These plants are very weedy. Photo of the leaves at the link below. Comments (5)Reading your comments I had to add my story. One evening when I was a young boy some friends and I were playing in an old neighborhood backyard. Near a weathered shed was a glorious bush loaded with huge flower that smelled so nice we all sniffed them. Over the years I have mused on that Magical evening. One day I was walking home from and ice cream parlor with my daughter and granddaughter, and smell that exquisite perfume again. Discovering it came from a small bush with large white flower I recalled the magical evening from childhood. The colors of the fading sun and the laughter of my friends was so beautiful and we all seemed touched by some charmed spirit... it was such a delightful experience the memory is like yesterday to this 'vintage' gentleman. Well, I came home and looked up the plant in a nature book and viola... there was the information on its haluciginic properties and its serious dangers as well. Our simply breathing in the fumes and possibly some pollen was enough to send us children on a mild "trip". I have wondered if this is something that opened a part of my being to become an artist. The musing about that is because I have been blessed to be an artist since a young man... with a joyful career in that calling. It makes me think if there is some safe way to experience the effects... though I would be lothe for anyone to become ill or die from experimentation with this plant. But I know breathing in those flowers did send me and my little friends into a charmed adventure. But again be aware of the warnings!...See MoreHow did I live before the internet?
Comments (21)When I got my undergrad (1973) we used slide rules. When I got my masters (1980) we used scientific calculators and had access to computer terminals. Those linked to a mainframe computer in a distant building on campus. When the first Macintosh came out I got one. Spreadsheets had been invented as had word processing software. A couple years later laser printers became affordable and portable computing really took off. The Internet had been invented but the World Wide Web was not quite there. Once that happened...oh my! I simply cannot imagine what it would be like to study engineering using spreadsheets. Spreadsheets are my right arm all day every day. Before the WWW I used to spend hours and hours in book stores and libraries. Up until 2004 our only phone was hanging on the wall in the kitchen (and our monthly phone bill, including limited long distance, was $33)....See MoreRhonda
