Need help with A/C & Furnace Repair

So a couple months ago my A/C and furnace stopped working. Had the thermostat replaced thinking that was the issue. It wasn't. Turned out to be a blown fuse. Had the fuse replaced. Worked again. Then a couple weeks later it stops working again. Transformer was replaced, it worked. Turned it off and didn't use it for a month. Go to turn it back on a couple days ago and now it's not working again. What could possibly be causing this problem?

Something is drawing too much current or there is a short somewhere. First guess is blower motor. Plenty of things it could be. Best of luck.

If this is the work of a qualified HVAC technician, I think you need to find a different one who's more capable and doesn't use the random hit and miss method of repair.

A little - no a lot confusing. JB weld works miracles. More simply for you, duct tape - seriously - you've said you don't care how it looks. As long as it's tight enough to maintain electrical contact, it should be ok. Just fold a little flap under so you can lift the tape to change the batteries. Help with new furnace and a/c. No heat!

The furnace is the G71 100,000 BTUs which is 95% AFUE. The A/C is the XC 21 4ton with two stages and SEER of 20.50. I am also getting the Healthy Climate 10 Media Air Cleaner and the 17 Bypass Humidifier. We are also replacing our water heater with the Rheem "direct vent" 50 gallon version with a 10 year warranty. I'll discuss the t-stat with the dealer. They start this afternoon tearing out the old and will install eveything tomorrow. Just in time as I heard colder weather and snow forecasted for later in the week. Thanks again for your advice. Steve

Hi, just had a complete system installed yesterday. I live in dallas where cooling means more than heating. cost 7k even for everything. here is a list of what was installed. Trane XR13 4 ton AC condenser. Trane XR80 5 ton 1 stage with 4 speed blower. New matching evaporator coil with the new R-410A refrigerant. New return and supply plenums, all sheet metal construction with exterior wrapped insulation. New manual air dampers at each supply duct. Added an extra return air duct, grill and filter in double existing volume of return. New drip pan with overflow float switch (cut off system if drainage get blocked - keeps ceiling from getting water damage). New electrical disconnect and wiring (located outside by the condenser). New concrete pad. New programmable thermostat. Did all the work required to rid and clean system of old coolant, hauled away old system and did a relatively good job cleaning up. This new system is so much cooler and better airflow than the old one and should be more efficient. I really wanted the sheet metal plenums with EXTERIOR insulation and the manual dampers. This should really pay off in the long run for comfort and health. Next time I should just have to replace the AC condenser. Furnace later. All in all I think I got a good deal and I'm pretty sure the work is A+. I paid a little extra for the plenums, dampers and for Trane products.

Thanks for the follow ups, really good information. I'll try to address each comment and ask some more questions. fluffybunnysui: The 1st contractor called me last night to ask about what I was thinking about doing to fix it. I told them I had a 2nd contractor come out and test it and told me the expansion valve. 1st contractor said that they determined it WAS NOT the expansion valve because they blocked off one side of the flow at/on the compressor, and the bypass valves opened and it couldn't suck the pressure all the way down.(I don't really understand how it works, I have replaced Automobile A/C but just followed basic instructions.) 2nd part: Both contractors said that they *think* the evap coil is icing up. Because we could turn the unit off for hours, let it melt, and then it would blow really cold again for a short time. Unfortunely for me, I had to leave the house today and go to work in a different city for the week. I can't spray the unit off, and my wife doesn't feel confident doing it, but the 1st contractor is due out to the house later today. thanks. Jack Mason: thanks, the 2nd contractor did show me their pricing on new units. Said $2,899 for a new evap coil and all related work. $4,600 for a 12 SEER outside unit. (my system is a 14 SEER I believe). Reading the link you provided now. thanks. Heatseeker: I don't know what refrigerant is used in my system. A quick web search points to R-410A. for OP, this is not a DIY site...just from the information you provided in your initial post, it seemed the tech got your furnace up and running and failed to correctly diagnose the cause of the problem and make the proper repair...

I'm not DIYing it, I'm looking for possible issues so I can estimate repair costs.

The list of possible causes is quite long and wouldn't be very helpful,a good technician is your best route.

Problem solved. It was a very simple fix and didn't require a technician. Thank you to those who tried to help.

It wasn't a DIY, someone came out and looked at it and didn't charge me because there wasn't anything technically wrong with it.

Gosh if only I could look at furnaces and know what ail's them,I can't even take an educated guess when homeowner supplies relivant details as in this case. Hmmmm,why is that guy going around making free service calls. I suppose it was because there wasn't anything "technically wrong". Must have just needed to be turned on.

I would need some more info to help in any way, is this a gas or oil furnace, if its gas is it 90+ or a natural draft unit? I am guessing it was the boards fuse that was blown?

If the unit had a failed thermostat, changing the thermostat and accidentally touching a couple of your t-stat wires together will burn out the fuse. If it needed a transformer (guessing this is gas again, because an oil furnace has 2 transformers, 1 for the low voltage control side and an ignition transformer for the oil burner), that could also be attributed to the thermostat problem.

Now when the unit is now NOT running, I would start by removing the front panel and making sure the led's on the board are lit, and if they are flashing a "code" the codes can be found on the back of the door in most cases, it will be a segmented flash code and should tell you where the failure is. I would also start by checking that fuse, and all power switches...
