Dog friendly backyard space - Northern Exposure - NC (Central)

We are building and currently have a space planned for the dogs that is about 140' x 12' and want it to be low maintenance. It's on the north side of the house, gets little sun because of the height of the house (unless in dead summer).

Grass won't be an option - as it simply won't grow.

The front yard will be the better grass and garden area, and we'll have areas on the property for more "fun" gardening.

Need something easy to manage and keep clean. This will not be a hangout or play area or entertaining area - but we will look out over it a little (but then behind it will be lovely woods - so it's not like your eye will "stop" in the backyard).

Hardscape with pavers and pea gravel? fake grass? (is that blasphemy?) pavers and moss?

Any ideas appreciated.
