Comments (20)Organic, thank you so much for the complement. I fell in love with the house the moment I saw it even though it was in really REALLY rough shape when I first saw it. Luckily we were able to look past the chipping paint and god awful gold brocade wallpaper (as a matter of fact EVERY wall was wallpapered and that was real fun taking all that down lol) to see that the bones were solid and really charming. We have been here for 8 years this fall but I really did not start working on the house in serious mode until about two years ago. I had a baby when we first moved in so between taking care of her and my two other kids, there just was not time or energy for the big stuff. I am only now just getting down to making it what I want it to be. The interior pictures are what the house looked like a few years ago which I knew would only be a temporary fix. I am in the middle of doing everything over again and getting down to the real changes I want to make. lol...hey, I am an out of work interior decorator so I have to use my skills somehow hehehe... Anyway, about your question, the paint color is Benjamin Moore "Butter". Two years ago we paid a contractor to scrape and paint the house. He gave me an estimate of 4,000 ... it ended up costing us 7,000 and the paint started peeling the very next year. Needless to say I am furious. The prep work he did was shoddy. So I am going to be doing some scraping myself in the next couple of weeks and will have to buy more paint and do certain areas over again. I sure hope they have this butter color still because I love it and do not wish to go lighter or darker. Usually if they no longer carry a certain color you can usually find the same color in their color charts with a new name attached to it. I may have a add a bit of cream to it to account for fading, but I will work that out :)...See MoreHow to create a style appropriate to a 1990s builder's house
Comments (48)Juliehc, it sounds like you're cooking. I like the cozy sound of saturated gray, but a white ceiling sounds both rather harshly contrasting and as if the white will set it off as not belonging with what's below it. That's a cousin to the problem illustrated in those initial pictures of a room that Hhireno so accurately described as decorated for a lower flat ceiling, with the rest just sort of...up there. A lighter neutral paint on the ceiling that was dark enough to blend calmly into the walls, or more accurately walls into ceiling as the eye travels up, would help make the ceiling part of the room. (I like beige with gray and wonder if that would be a place for it.) I was also struck by Hhireno's comments about the effect of furniture shapes in the pictures Palimpsest posted. This isn't the only way to decorate high volumes, but it certainly works exquisitely in those pictures. Allied with that is my own observation that in every one of those designs, which are meant to celebrate their wonderful high spaces and make them look their best (rather than "deal with" or ignore them as problems), is that dark, contrasting colors are kept low, while the rest of their volumes soar with little interruption to their lightness. Julie's going warmer and richer with grays and beiges, with a very different feeling in mind, but I feel sure there're lessons in there anyway....See MoreDress that would be appropriate for funeral
Comments (53)As you can see, there's quite a range of experiences with funerals. My experience has been as varied--one of my grandfathers was a well known business man and he traveled in the country club/golf circles. His funeral mass was in a cathedral and definitely a black suit occasion. My other grandfather's service was a riverside celebration of life (which was marked with a release of trout fishlings). Two years later, my grandmother's service was in the same spot and a daisy chain was released. Both events were held on the grounds of a local inn/restaurant/event facility (primarily weddings) and catered by them. The dress was much more appropriate to an outdoor event. I provided detail here because it very much dictated the expected dress-- where a sundress/sleeveless dress was very appropriate to the outdoor celebration of life, they'd have been most out of place in the cathedral. Like so many other events, you want to know the location and crowd. Since you'll be attending funerals of those close to you, I think you should follow your instincts. I assume you will be handling or in close touch with those handling the arrangements so you will know just how formal or informal to go. I have a dress similar to the first one you posted in black-- also from Talbots-- and it is a very easy to wear dress that is both flattering and forgiving. I also think it is very adaptable-- it can be dressed up and down with jewelry, shoes. While I don't generally wear their dresses, Talbots has actually been my go-to for funeral dresses. There are quite a few in my area and they always have a simple sheath dress (which are also very forgiving) that can be easily paired with a jacket and simple jewelry (pearls?). Talbots runs big sales-- 30-40% off at various times through the year. I'd hold out for one of the sales and then try a few styles-- again, their cuts tend to be very forgiving so you may be able to wear a style you wouldn't from another maker. Sorry you have to be thinking of these things -- but I think you are doing the right thing to get your clothing together now. The last thing you will want to do after the death of a parent or in-law is to panic shop for an outfit....See MoreExterior colour palette for unusual house - what colours would you do?
