how do i cut the brown tips off my spider plant?
Comments (11)Lamora, waiting a few days before repotting was a good idea. Some authors suggest waiting six-months, but when roots pop out of drainage holes, it's time to repot. If the pot is too large there will be problems. The max is 2" larger than the rootball. Miracle Gro is good soil, but it should be amended with other mediums like Perlite. MG has some Perlite mixed in, but not enough. So, if you decide to reduce pot size, add Perlite with MG. After repotting, 'pot needs drainage holes,' water thoroughly. Place in a bright to sunny spot, and let be. Watering depends on pot size, air moisture, and heat/cool temps. Soil should dry between waterings. Three ways to test soil is, 1. insert your finger or a thin stick deep in soil..if it comes out moist/wet, bottom soil is still wet. Don't water. 2. Lift pot. If it's heavy, soil is damp to wet. Don't water. If light, give it a drink. 3. Water guages. Don't bother with the little cardboard types..they're trash. If you want a decent guage, buy one at a reputable shop. But, inserting a stake/finger is the best, and econical way. No need spending money. Lamora..you didn't fail your plant. Losing plants is part of gardening and a way of learning. All gardeners, in and out, lost plants at times. We learn by our mistakes. Correct what we did wrong with the first plant. So, please don't feel bad. There are two other methods I use and find very helpful. you might or might not be interested. One is misting plants daily. Sprayers are inexpensive. The second is a product called Superthive. Superthrive contains hormones and 50 Vitamins. It does wonders with sick plants, seedlings or healthy plants that need a boost. It is not a fertilizer. In fact, it can be used with fertilizer, but not to be confused as a fertilizer. Neither methods are needed, but as a long-time gardener, I've been using/doing both over 20 yrs. Actually longer, but I won't go there, lol. Hope your Spider does well...Toni...See MoreWhat's wrong with my spider plant?
Comments (6)i am positive.. its root bound ... wouldnt be surprised if there is little or no media in the pot ... and that is why you are having watering issues ... as there is nothing to hold the water for a few days so the plant can soak it up ... also.. when it is such.. the only way to water.. is to use an old dish washing pan and let it soak in tepid water.. until what is left of the media.. can soak up some ambient water... usually a couple hours ... do such ... and compare the weight of the pot.. to your watering protocol ... and you will be amazed.. how heavy a properly watered plant is ... what i do ... is every late spring.. when its time to take them outside for summer ... i harvest the babes... the best of the lot ... 3 for a pot that size.. unless you want to make other baskets for friends ... get some new media.... clean out the pot... and plant the 3 babes .. and leave it alone for summer... by fall.. it will have filled the pot with roots.. and will start to spider.. by the time i bring them in for winter ... in the alternative... get three 8 oz solo cups.. cut drainage .. and root up the babes ... and by the time they root down.... pot them up as above ... you can use scissors to clip off the brown ends.. to make it LOOK nicer.. but if you dont solve the media/watering issue... it will all happen again ... though they dont mind low light level... being that close to the ceiling.. in an interior corner... doesnt help ... but i surely know.. that is where the hook is... lol ... and who needs more holes in such .... agree this should have been in the garden clinic or houseplant forums... but who cares ... if you like us.. we like you ... lol start rooting some new ones.. so you can mess around with this one ... good luck ken ps: with trailing plants such as this ... mother will be sacrificed for the babes.. and that is why she is showing damage.. but not them ... when they start showing damage... you have giant problems .... Here is a link that might be useful: something like what i use.. think dollar store???? ... when dry.. my plant will actually float in the pan for about an hour.. before it starts soaking up water ... and that defines your base problem ......See MoreWhy did Spider Plant "Boonie" become Green Spider Plant?
Comments (36)The rhizome contains genetic information that will duplicate the parent plant. when you take a leaf cutting, the whole reproductive process changes. Just one cell from either I, II, or III will begin the rooting process but that one cell only contains the genetic material coding for whichever layer it comes from. The rhizome contains all of the genetic information from the parent, instead of having to start from scratch at just one type of cell. many African Violets are this way, chimeras. You can reproduce the plant only if you have a full crown (with all the genetic information, including the mutation) but if you take a leaf and try to propagate a new plant, it will not be true to the parent and will lose some of that genetic coding along the way. The cells in the leaves are very simple. They are to do one thing, and one thing only. Now, the cells in the dormant buds contain a different type of cell, one with much more potential than just a leaf cell. imagine it as if the dormant buds are similar to human stem cells, they can grow into almost any type of organ or tissue. Humans can't regenerate limbs (or bodies) so that example has to stop there lol. But with starfish (sea stars!), they can grow a limb back, but if a limb is ripped off, unless it has part of that central core (body), then the arm cells don't have enough genetic information to create a new body. The difference is the TYPE of cell used in starting the plant, whether it's a "stem cell" that holds information for the whole plant or just a leaf cell that is specialized and only holds the genetic information for its layer of leaf cells. That's probably going to be really confusing. It was kind of all over the natural world lol. I love biology though, so I enjoy our conversations!...See MoreWhat is this structure growing from Spider plant? Not stolon/babies?
Comments (17)After I up-potted my spider plant last month, it put out not one, but FOUR alien tentacles...and none of them produced babies, but all of them produced flowers. The first one that came out was the biggest, and it itself had four branches! It was nuts!! I'm really curious to know what yours is up to. Hopefully, also flowers. Spider plant flowers are so cute and small. =)...See Morelitterbuggy (z7b, Utah)
