Saving a broken spider plant stolon
Comments (8)I know this is an ancient thread but wanted to thank you all. I had the same thing happen to two of my stolons with very tiny spiderettes on them and this was the first result with actual relevant advice. I think I'm going to try rooting them in a very shallow tray of very damp soil and see if they survive. My initial thought was to put the stolon in a vase with water and hope it could continue to nurture them but that doesn't sound like the best plan going forward....See MoreChlorophytum comosum (Spider Plant) Babies & Flowers
Comments (10)Purple, I get a ton of seeds every winter when I bring my green and white spiders inside to protect them from the harsh Ohio winter. I usually don't notice that the seed pods have opened until I get ready to vacuum and notice the seeds in the carpet. Then the following Spring when I take the spiders and other plants back outside to bask in the warmth of the sunshine, many pots have new totally green baby spider plants sprouting in them. I am told that seeds produce totally green plants even if the parent plant was green and white....See Morehow do i make my spider plant have babies?
Comments (37)so, what's the answer? cause i bought my spider plant, already growing, about 3 years ago (give or take) and ive never seen a baby . h**l ive never even had a full bushy plant despite; the south facing window, soaking and drying completely for water (twice a month ill say), i feed liquid fish fertilizer (2-3-0) and replace the potassium with bimonthly banana peels (i prefer organics for plants) . its hanging in a basket .. i changed the soil this summer so i know the tube roots are thriving (actually wasnt prepared for them and scared the begeebys out myself hahaha) . my only thought upon reading above posts ; could i have repotted too soon and didn't let the roots get hugged? cause i assumed like most other plants if you give more space for roots, the more intricate the roots become, the stronger the plant .. is that wrong? helpp !! i want plant babies !...See Morespider plants stolons!!!!! HOW!!!!!
Comments (4)and i think it likes it on the dry side .... google the plant for proper watering ... i have 3 hanging baskets in the house until summer ....i let mine dry until they start to go limp ... a little too far as i get browning.. but the furnace makes it very hard in winter... sopping wet for a week ... then bone dry, when i dont test it for a few days ... stand it in water for a day ... and then ignore it for a few weeks ... I AGREE >> THIS IS NOT A FOO FOO PLANT .... and i never fertilize it in winter ...once at the beginning of summer, once they get outside ... every second or third year i repot... as by that time.. there is no soil left in the pot .. its all roots ... now that is potbound ... you dont want to know what i do to it.. to get it back into the same hanging basket ... with room for root regeneration ... lol so.. abuse it.. repot it to a smaller pot.. hang it outside after frostfree time comes ... in the shade.... .... make sure you arent giving it the wrong fert formula ... generally abuse it until it thinks its going to die.. so as to encourage it to think it will die.. and then it will try to fulfill its only goal in life ... procreation ... and it will put out the stolons so as to flower and seed and put out the baby spidies ... and if you kill it based on these recommendations... let me know.. i will send you some of the hundreds of baby spiders i have ... you really cant hurt this thing ... which reminds me of one of my garden truisms.. we usually do more harm with too much love, than with too little ... maybe this plant is just too happy ...lol .. good luck ... ken...See MoreTiffany, purpleinopp Z8b Opp, AL
