Controlling mice near trees
Comments (23)I don't have a mouse or rat problem but I do have a vole problem which some years are so bad it makes you want to give up on growing anything outdoors. I know it sounds odd but I now live in a city that outlaws free range cats (as do most of the neighboring cities) so all my cat experience is from when I lived somewhere else. My experience has been that some cats are good hunters and some are not. I've had cats that were only interested in hunting birds and left everything on the ground alone and I've cats that only wanted to kill lizards and snakes and ignored birds and I've had cats that were great hunters but only for a portion of their long lives, when they get old they tend to sleep most of the day (my current housecat is 21 years old and shows no sign of dying anytime soon). Two things that I do that help with voles is I encourage snakes to live in my yard by keeping brush piles and rock piles near the fruit trees and bushes and around the edge of the garden. That only helps in the summer when snakes are active. I also build bucket traps by sinking a 5 gallon bucket down into the ground so that the top rim is level with the ground. I put an inch or so of soil in the bottom and bait it with fruit bits and peanut butter crackers or fig newtons. I put an old board or a large flat rock over the top so that it is completely covered. Voles and all sorts of small mammals fall into the trap and can't climb out. Snakes can climb in and eat the voles and then climb out. Least shrews also fall in and will eat anything that falls in also including voles which are bigger than the shrew. The only problem is the shrews die in a few hours if they don't have food so you either have to check the traps often or leave a lot of bait in them or accept that your trap is also going to kill a primary killer of voles....See MoreHelp! mice getting at insulation under floors
Comments (7)sorry for delay in answering, I couldn't log in. Thank you T.@ GW for responding to my problem so quickly. Ontario DIYguy I think I will go with the fine wire mesh. Please correct if I am wrong, butI don't think that another vapour barrier would be to good under there.?..? I have VB under my floor to keep out moisure. Heres the layers from top to bottom. :-) Plank floor, osb,VB,joists and in between joist is insulation, which the laths are holding in place. I was planning on sliding in some VB one the ground when finished playing around under there with "mouse/critter barrier". :-) Mikie Thanks for your reply. Again very apprecaited. :-) "Mouse food" or traps is not good for me outside as I have to many other critters around that might get into it. However I do put it in side IF they make it that far! Forgive an ignorant question from this new to DIY ole gal, but I am learning quickly, thanks in part to people here. This radiant barrier, is that to keep out damp or air or? Comments (10)just as bob mentioned you click start> all programs and at the top you click on windows updates, it takes you to the windows update site. It will scan your pc for what updates it needs, you will then be asked if you want custom or express, with custom you can read about each update prior to install this is how I always did it but express will just automatically install all critical updates. Either is fine, then it will install the selected updates. on that same page over on the left side I believe is a link for viewing your installed updates. Anytime your computer is scanned for windows updates it will find any that may have been accidentally missed like you think may have happened and they will be re offered as long as it is a critical update....See MoreHow much control do you let kids have and decorating their rooms?
Comments (78)I love how her room is coming along! It's fun, sophisticated, and entirely appropriate. The wood tones fit in really well. I didn't go into my personal experience with letting children choose their decor, but overall my attitude is that they should have choice within a set of parameters; I have boys who are not highly opinionated and my decor style is not highly feminine....See MoreJennifer
