How Much Land do You Have ?Animals?
Comments (62)I have a half acre, all that's left of the original 300 acre farm. I'm surrounded by 1950's raised ranches. We have 2 indoor cats, 9 of 10 koi, and a German Shepherd that thinks the cats are rabbits in the house. Poor kitties live in fear, but he's such a great dog otherwise, I just work around it. We have a few rabbits and squirrels outside, and I've seen an occasional possom and raccoon. The dog tends to keep them all at a distance. Ideally, we'd have at least 2 acres, maybe up to 10 or 20, and I'd get the dog a playmate. My daughter would love to have horses, but she really doesn't understand the work they require. Two acres would give us room for the dog to run, more room for a pool and a basketball court and gardens. Always ;-) Hunzi...See MoreHow much freedom do you have in design choices?
Comments (43)DH and I were both a bit older, settled into our careers and each had very nicely furnished apartments when we married. Mine was a cozy Cottagey Shabby Chic. His was Contemporary Elegant but very comfortable. Combining our two homes was both funny and frustrating. Over the years, though, we've developed a common taste in furniture and art . . . at least most of the time (LOL)! DH has very good (and expensive) taste, while I'm still much more hesitant to spend a lot of money on things than he is. I prefer haunting antique and consignment shops. He'd rather head to some upscale furniture gallery, order it and then head on to a nice restaurant (with me) to relax. These days I pretty much have free rein to buy the smaller things, but DH likes to go with me when making major purchases to help decide. As many of you know already, I'm a passionate collector of art. Most of it, DH has thankfully liked. There are several pieces, though, he barely tolerates and one he flat-out doesn't like. Darned if it's not a beautiful, large, original painting that I adore! At the moment it's hanging over the laundry hamper in our bedroom foyer. I'm hoping he'll eventually come to tolerate it. On the other hand, I've gotten rid of a number of his Contemporary art pieces over the years. That or they're stored away in closets. My bad (LOL)! He doesn't have a "man cave". The closest he comes to that is his study, which does have only the art, furniture and rug he chose. So, we compromise where we can because we love each other. Every once in a while, though, he gets a wild hair idea to choose certain things by himself. Sometimes I let him (LOL). He picked out our new pots and pans (All Clad Professional) that I'm not all that crazy about. This was a compromise on my part. He'd originally fallen in love with ~and bought!~ an extremely heavy and cumbersome Le Creuset covered cast iron skillet. I agreed he could keep it, but nixed any more LCs. I still avoid using the darn thing . . . but every Sunday morning he happily makes us eggs or something in it, so how can I complain? I also gave in and let him buy all of our knives (Wustof), which I admit are nice. (Sigh!) now he wants to go out this weekend with me and insists he gets to help choose our new vacuum, omelet pan and coffeemaker, all of which have given up the ghost in the past week. I'm afraid to let him go by himself. Grrrr! Lynn...See MoreParents: Did you decorate your kid's dorm room?
Comments (85)Oh, good grief! Anything can be taken out of context and to the worst degree! I’ve purposely avoided this thread after I initially posted, as some posters made it sound like any parent who helped decorate this kid’s dorm room was crushing that child’s own creativity “Mommy-Dearest-like”. In retrospect, I’m sure there are parents like that. And, yes, some of those initially featured pics of rooms are so incredibly unpractical. BUT, there are so many more, like us, where daughters have grown up learning from mothers who are very good at decorating, and they are absorbing and enjoying it, too. They have their own likes and dislikes, which are encouraged and respected. BUT, they still need and want help with storage issues in those minuscule shared dorm rooms, lighting ideas, and a lot of other ideas to consider. It irritates the heck out out of me that some immediately paint the worst scenario when someone (Me) says, yes I did help my daughter decorate her dorm room. No, it was not some impractical designer room. No, it did not make her friends there hate her or her room. But, yes, it was overseen by DD and her roommate with the colors and art they wanted and chose. We mothers did, though, know what and where to find the storage and lighting that would facilitate the very best use of that minimal space. And, we did it at our daughters’ and with our daughters’ blessings. In closing, there are probably as many normal, happy mom-daughter collaborations as there are non/collaborations. Maybe I’m in the minority, having had a great, fun relationship with my own daughter her entire life. I consider it a blessing, but one that takes work. My own daughter has learned and absorbed so much interior design creativity from me over the years. She could easily make it her career if she chose. And, we love trading ideas still. But, even at age five, I allowed her to make the final design decisions with her own personal spaces. Not all decorator mothers are “Mommy Dearest monsters”....See MoreCome clean--how much cheese do you really have?
Comments (47)We have more on hand than we have ever had pre-covid. Three cheddars waxed with Sept dates. Three/4 in small food saver packages we cold smoked last thanksgiving. A big pecorino wheel waxed. Motz, goat, 3 different fetas. (had six a month ago). Had the igourmet blue collection then a wheel of gorgonzola enjoyed, then froze some in 1/4 pints. That was 3.5 pounds. Wholesale delivery. Always had Costco basics. Then random 1/4 pound cheese monger treats of the rare good stuff every month or so.. Just not doing that type of shopping now. I even expected to be making my own by now but had trouble getting the milk I like. I can get it now locally but we are so stocked in cheese....maybe next month. The wholesaler has now paired up with a well know NYC cheese monger so next order I can get smaller cuts. I need a good blue. Or two. This was eye opening. Did not know it is technically a cheese. They use rennet. So good. like a greek yogurt/cream cheese hybrid. I had to purchase a full case of 12. Then found a recipe...HERE Looking forward to making this style yogurt....See MoreRelated Professionals
