Replacing 20 year old split AC and gas furnace in North Carolina

Upstairs 1800 SFT
Current AC XE 1000 Trane - 3 tons
Current Gas Furnace XE 80 - 80 BTU
Both 20 yrs old and on last legs - 3 ton AC and 80 BU Furnace cooled and heated the upstairs well - 4 Bed rooms - each bed room has individual air return

After much reading and excellent help on this forum ( thanks to Tiger Dunes , Ryan Hughes ) decided on :

AC - Trane XR 14

Furnace - Trane XT 80

Will use existing Nest Thermostat

New copper line set and check duct work and seal as needed

( Budget constraints - wanted XR 17 and XV 80 - but they are pricing too high )

Prices are a little high but they are regional. The only way to get a good handle on prices is to get multiple estimates. 10 year labor warranties run around $650 but be careful what you are getting - all of them are from 3rd parties which have a habit of going bust. Also, most of them require annual maintenance to be performed. The cost of the policy plus the cost of the annual maintenance over 10 years will likely exceed the cost of any repairs.

We also have a dual fuel HP in ATL (13 SEER + 80% NG furnace). If you're going to invest that kind of $$ in a new system, plus pay to operate it for the foreseeable future, I'd do everything I can to ensure I got a quality install. Below is a link to a Southface Energy Institute fact sheet on blower door and duct blaster tests. They're an ATL non-profit. I highly recommend the info they have on their site. They might even be able to help or point you in the direction of a contractor to design your system and/or test your house/ducts. Ideally, you'd have the blower door done to feed into the Manual J sizing of the system. Then, after your new ducts were installed and sealed (but before insulating), you'd have the latter done to test how tight the duct system is. A brand new system, installed right, ought to leak at about 0.05cfm/sq ft of living space. That's only 125 cfm for your house. If at all possible, you want to maximize the amount of rigid ductwork, only allowing flex duct at the runouts (I'd get at least the Vision Pro w/ an outdoor sensor to control the switch to Aux heat. My understanding is that the IAQ version will handle the staging possibilities better than the 8000 series VP. It also costs more. I'd also be interested in getting a HP w/ good low temperature performance. Our gas bills have gotten smaller since getting the VP set up to control the switch. But on an old house, you're still going to use gas for the days in the teens/twenties like we've seen this winter. Anyway, food for thought. We have used ACS to do work on our system. Yeah that's R22 and while that is a builder grade Trane unit that is probably out of warranty by now... typically those were sold with 5 year parts warranty. Because R22 Freon was already obsolete by 2013. With that said, this condenser 'could' last another 10 years, provided the coil repair work is done appropriately. The replacement coil needs to be a coil suitable for R22 / any coil can be retro fitted to work, but skill is required in choosing the coil. Typically home warranty companies are known for tom foolery. If the condenser was a dry condenser (nitrogen gas) it would say it was on the data plate in some manner. That's the down side in anything Trane or American Standard because they were one of the last manufacture's to switch over to R410a refrigerant. The R22 conundrum only effects you if there is a leak... otherwise it doesn't matter much. While the cost for it will only go up now that production has ceased, it's serviceable life is still around another 10 years or so. Without United Technologies Corporation heavy investment in R410a AC equipment development we would be no where near where we are today. R410a equipment has been available now for almost 20 years if you can imagine that.

The price of propane is rising, isn't it? In this case, I'd consider heat pumps that will switch over to propane when the temperature is low enough to warrant the use of propane over the efficient heat pumps (around 35-40* or so). Few matchups will get near the 19-20 SEER range. You need the sizes and full model numbers of the equipment being quoted to know for sure. Trane, Carrier and Bryant all make fine products. If going with Carrier, ask for a tin-plated copper coil (heard of leaking problems with Carrier's *ACA standard copper coils--I guess all mfg's have leak problems). The Infinity/Evolution is a nice system. I personally favor Trane over Carrier--I think Trane's quality is hard to beat, but that's just my opinion. I do wish the XL19i was available in R410A, but that will be a little later. Is your electricity particularly expensive? Going with the top-of-the-line SEER/units may not have a great payback. 20 years old? They've done their time. As far as duct noise goes, if your ductwork is sized correctly, then you should be fine. However, the variable-speed blowers maintain proper CFM and will overcome slightly deficient ductwork systems. If the ductwork system is undersized/deficient, it will be louder as it attempts to maintain proper CFM (versus the PSC blowers where if the ductwork was poor it wouldn't vary its speed to maintain airflow). If it's quiet now, I don't think it will be a problem--I'm just pointing this out about variable-speed blowers. Once you get a few quotes, post back with the info and we can advise.

The DOE has worksheets that can help you calculate the relative cost of heating and cooling with different systems using your current energy costs. Of course you need to predict the relative costs over the next decade or two to really tell what is best. How is your crystal ball working? I would like to clear up a couple of common misconceptions. One type of heat does not dry a house in the winter any more than another. Leaky house envelopes dry houses. Heat by flame of some sort might dry a house more because they draw more outside air in if there is not a source of outside combustion air. That would be the only mechanism. There is nothing special about heat pumps in poorly-insulated, leaky homes. No heat or air conditioning source works as well in that situation as well as they do in tighter, well-insulated homes.

You confirmed my thoughts on Labor - will skip , rather invest in regular maintenance

Got 2 quotes from Trane , 2 from equivalent AS units - all pricing 7-9 K

Medium sized market - so less competition

a good basic single stage system and it is an AHRI match. See below. Pricing on high side.

I would get the Perfect Fit Media Cabinet and forget the ext labor warranty at that price. The only question I have is whether you could get away with the 60K XT80 furnace model over the 80 K size. Ask for a load calculation. More is not better. Once a year PM is enough BTW.

You need to consider writing a book - something like " HVAC for dummies" - it will be a best seller - HVAC is a tough subject to understand - you and others make it somewhat less intimidating.

Will ask for a load calc.

Current furnace 20 yr old Trane XE 80 - 75 K BTU - did heat upstairs ( 1800 sft , 4 bed rooms with individual air returns , 3 bath rooms and FROG ) well.
