Food pantry cabinet to fit into corner: design help needed!

There are such wonderful food pantries on this site and great ideas for storage so I hope someone can help me figure out how to design a pantry that maximizes the useful space and accessibility.

The pantry will be slotted into an alcove--nothing is moveable as there is a chimney stack on one side and a wall at 90' on the other. Ceiling height is 9'2" and the space for the pantry is 37" wide and 20" deep (we can make it a few inches deeper if need be):

How would you design this pantry? is there a system that is narrow enough to fit this space? how much clearance (or narrow pull out pantry) do I need on the right hand side to be able to open the door? I looked on the Rev-a-Shelf site and did not see a system that would be narrow enough but may have missed it.

Or use all pull out/rollout shelves? if so, do you have a recommendation on the best quality/value? How much clearance do I need for the doors?

I was planning on having this custom made but since the sides are not visible, wondering if there is a more cost effective solution: for example just getting custom doors made?

All advice from food pantry cabinet owners who have experience with this challenge or pros most appreciated. I cannot wait to have a useful food pantry!

You could go with all pull out drawers of varying depths, very simple, yet functional.

Here's mine I built in 1986, still going strong. Small kitchen, could only squeeze in 18" wide, although they are 27" deep. Melamine boxes on old good ol' Accuride full extension guides.

Did you build those or have them custom made? I like the idea of some deep drawers esp lower down to corral it all

Thanks, desertsteph, I completely understand - its is almost a wall of cabinets. But the wall opposite this one has no upper cabinets and I have a 4ft tall by 9 foot wide window. So I think openness of the one wall will balance the heaviness of the other, plus, I want lots of storage =). I am just trying to get the biggest bang for my buck, and I don't have all my kitchen stuff here at this temporary home so it's hard to visualize where things will go or the best way it may fit.

The only thing I would sit there to do is write out bills, file, and shred. I removed the desk area from the kitchen because it became a landing spot for too much stuff. I usually sit at the kitchen table to write bills, but I'm not gonna shred or file there, so I'd rather it be in one place. I won't be there for very long. Hopefully. I guess I need to put a pretty picture hanging there to look at just in case! I rarely ever print anything, so the printer is at my son's desk for his school work. I'll keep the lap top in the pantry/office, and try to persuade DH to return it there if he's out and about with it. Good luck, I know. I prefer to have a chair there not only to file and shred with my bad back, but also to have a place to sit and take off wet boots/shoes. This photo was my inspiration, but they have more space at 6 ft wide. Mine is only 47" wide for the table/desk area including the depth of the pantries that are 15". So I'm only gonna have 32" for desk area, but the counter will have a niche area 15" deep running into corner next to pantries. The counter will be 47".

oldbat2be I don't think a pocket door will work, but also I prefer being able to use the back of the door for a spice rack. Stan Z, good point about future furnace replacement. It's in good shape (we had it inspected recently), but you never know. In the pre-demo layout, there was already two 32" doors between the furnace and main area. The door closest to the furnace is a louvered bifold. The other door was between laundry and wet bar, we've removed that and are putting in a door instead between wet bar and new kitchen, which is along the 90" wall. You can get a rough idea of the new kitchen layout - it'll go pantry door, then refrigerator, then induction stove top, then wall oven/microwave across the 90" wall. With an island across from it with sink and dishwasher. But I think you mean keep the pantry side of the 90" wall free, in case we have to remove the furnace in the future? That was my thought as well -- I am thinking just put in hooks there for hanging mops and brooms. Thanks for the recommendation for the 65" wall. I was thinking deeper shelves on bottom (15-18 inch?) then 12 inch shelves higher up (for canned goods). Or would you go 15-18 inch for all the shelves? Does anyone know of an online closet/pantry design site where I can play around with the layout? Most of the ones I've found won't allow you to design an odd-shaped pantry like this.

The corner pantry breaks up what could be, continuous counter space. I have a reach-in pantry that holds as much as yours…without having to store stuff on the floor. Getting rid of the corner pantry will give much more flexibility to the future kitchen plan, and make for a more efficient setup. And, move the microwave to an upper shelf, and put a real venting hood above the cooktop. Like this:

Ps: how many inches of clearance did you need in the far side (by the door) to allow the door to open and drawers to open?

Yes, I built them, but someone like Drawer Box Specialties can make them to your specified dimensions. I have a 2-1/4" face frame on the left side, and for the pantry door to open to 90*, it just barley clears the casing on the Dutch door. I'd allow a bit more if doing it again...
Nice thing about side drawer guides, is that you can always adjust in
the future for different drawer spacing. (Note the two drawers where the
guides are not at the bottom)... changes made after the fact.

Try easyclosets.com. You can design your own pantry or have one of their designers do it for you. I've used their products for three projects and have been very pleased.

Just reread specs and I think that the Rev-a-Shelf swing out system will work as it requires a 30" minimum width (I have 37"). That would leave up to 7 inches for the right hand door to swing open: is that enough?

Perhaps I could have a pull out pantry or filler in those 6-7"?

Rev-A-Shelf 4WP Series Wood Swing-out Pantry--this requires a minimum of 30" in width. I have just over 37" but need to be able to open the right door so wondering if the pull outs below, if placed to the right would work?

and below is the Rev-a-Shelf pullout pantry (there is a wood option and a metal option: any opinions on what is better?)

This comes as narrow as just over 4" so not sure what the difference between this and the filler really is--anyone know?

And is there a different company that makes a better product or equally good product that I should look into?

I think I would build adjustable shelves, deeper on the bottom, 12 - 15" on the top. You'd maximize the storage space and minimize cost, and increase flexibility.

If you want to do pull-outs, I suggest Blum Metaboxes. I've built several of these for various places in my house and my Mom's, and they are not too difficult to build and install, if you are halfway decent with tools.

AnnaKH--we currently have shelves that are deep enough that it is a disaster: things disappear into the back, it is chaotic because getting something from the back creates a jumble of everything else. And encourages DH to just cram stuff on top. I don't want to maximize storage as much as I want to maximize organization and accessibility! I'll check out the boxes--thanks.

Blum Metabox

Each kit comes with drawer sides and glides, available in varying heights and depths (and the instructions on-line are excellent at helping determine exactly what size to get). The front, back and bottom are made of plywood that you buy and cut yourself. I do not have a table saw, but I have a terrific lumber yard that cuts a sheet of plywood to my precise specifications (to the 1/16").

A pullout set of drawers below eye and pullout shelves with guard rails (cause highboy style drawers are a PITA) higher up.

Check pinterest for the phrase pull out pantry and there's a gazillion to choose from.

Having them fully extendable keeps stuff from getting l9ost in the back.
