Resource for extra-narrow kitchen/dining table
Comments (17)Sueb, that's exactly what I was looking for about five years ago, and I bought the castellet console from Ballard designs linked below. It was the only table I could find whose leaves folded in on each other to make a narrow table. The design has changed a bit since five years ago, the new version is shorter than mine, which is seven feet long. Even though we have plenty of room in our kitchen, I wanted something that would give us the widest possible traffic pattern. Our kitchen is adjacent to our formal living room, an odd design that we've had to work around :). When we are all present I can pull the table out from the windows, fold out the top and have a very spacious table for six. It's very well priced and ours still looks great, which it shoulda, of course, after only five years! Comments (5)I'm having a 5 foot long and 24 inch wide table built for our small breakfast nook. It can't be any wider or it will interfere with the path from the door outside to the kitchen. I plan on using it for people to sit on one side and talk to me while I cook or a place where my husband can bring in one or two cowboys for a cup of coffee. Tall people can sit on the ends. But since it will mostly be for two people to four, it will be great. We are having steel legs bent. Then putting a hardwood irregular top on it. Kind of like Urban Hardwoods table. Comments (11)Salex, I knew I recognized your name. I believe you commented on one of my earlier posts about building cabinets yourself. When we first moved in we were just going to add an island and DH was going to build it, which I was fine with but we've had some big changes since then. He was laid off suddenly shortly after we bought the house and I had to go back to work (the timing worked out as my son just entered kindergarten).. He did find more work and we are much better off then we were before with me working as well, however our kitchen is extremely dysfunctional and he doesn't help with any cooking or cleaning. Working and trying to hand wash dishes for my family and deal with the wonky space with no storage and I am at the end of my rope. I do not have patience for DIY right now when it comes to this major source of angst in my life. There are so many things in our house that he could work on and build for and I would welcome everyone one of them but I just can't get excited about him doing the kitchen. I think he has most of the tools you mentioned but does not have a good source of wood. He also really isn't "in practice" with woodworking. He knows it, but hasn't honestly done much in the 10 years we've been married (think he did more when he was younger) so I'm not confident in him doing this. I do think he's capable of figuring it out, I just don't know what we'll have to go through to get to the end result. I think I'm about to find out though. He's insistent on doing it and as much as I am against it I can't just go drop $8K on cabinets if he's not in agreement with me. I thought I'd gotten him open to at least considering buying if I found something decent at a decent price but I guess not. I'm sorry, I'm feeling very disappointed right now. I'm not ready for this journey. Thank you for the link about the drawer in a drawer, I'll check it out!...See MoreHow to set up living/dining with angled wall and narrowed dining?
Comments (15)Here is my advice. I hope the dining table you purchased has a leaf that can be removed or added when necessary It's important to get the table confined to the space assigned as dining. Everyone has events that require a table to expand into another space to accommodate a large crowd. Putting the table on an angle looks ridiculous. Your space is basically rectangular except for the one angled feature wall. I would not place two small chairs against such an important wall. I see you have highlighted the wall with wallpaper and that's a good start. Now select a sideboard with either art or a mirror placed above to really draw attention to the wall. There's hardly enough space to begin with, and placing the sofas on angles just reduces the available space by about 20% or so. With the arrangement below your dining table can expand into the living room area when necessary. Get an area rug to anchor the seating area....See Morerosesstink
