Is anyone else planting the iris's I'm planting?
Comments (3)To answer your question Iris Gal, no I am not starting a business. I'm just someone who loves Iris's and lost most of mine this summer. Can't stand the thought of not being surrounded by their beauty this coming Spring. Walter could you please email me and tell me more about your iris's? I am pleased to know that some of them are your babies. However I have no ideal which ones they are. I look farward to hearing from you. Comments (70)I'm new here :-) and this may or may not help, but I make my own laundry detergent - I'm allergic to a lot of scented products, so it's the best option I've found. My basic recipe is 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup washing soda, 1 cup Borax, 1 bar castile soap (grated; can also use 1 bar Zote or Ivory, but the castile is 99 cents at my grocery!). Can add 1/4 cup Purex crystals for scent. Shake it all up in a bottle and use 2 tbsp per load. This is great for HE washers since it doesn't foam up. Our clothes are so much softer and cleaner now - we even stopped using fabric softener altogether! It's much cheaper than purchasing detergent and, for me at least, has been great allergy-wise. You might give that a try!...See MoreDetergents revisited
Comments (66)Sshrivastava is probably correct about the lack of softness you will get from vinegar as a fabric softener. However, vinegar will help with fading, especially if you have hard water. Water "hardness" varies and is measured by a scale; but when it measures about 5 grains calcium carbonate per gallon, it contains enough calcium and magnesium to do noticeable damage to clothing. If you have hard water and use a powder detergent, it is better to add vinegar to the wash cycle as it dissolves the minerals in the water, thus prevents them from binding to the detergent and leaving a residue on your clothing. Generally, it is 1 cup of vinegar for a full load of laundry. But that is with a traditional, agitator machine. IÂve read on eco/vegan forums where writers simply fill their bleach dispensers with vinegar (no reports of problems). Conversely, when adding vinegar to the rinse cycle, they fill the fabric softener dispenser. I know what you mean about missing the scent of laundry. Allergies and psoriasis forced me to perfume and dye free detergents; itÂs been nearly a year, but I still miss the scent of lavender in my laundry. Comments (63)Thanks for sharing Whirlpool. I'm glad someone finally did a comparison. So they said Seventh Generation was comparable to conventional detergents...Which ones? How much worse than tide was it? The other thing I found interesting in reading reviews of Mrs. Meyer's on Amazon, many complained about it causing a funky aroma on their laundry after a period of time. That has also happened to me with green detergents. I wonder if the plant-based surfactants build up and start to decay?...See Moredoreycrouse
