Feed your Fireants some grits
Comments (14)DRATS! I had hoped that we could go for a whole season without someone bringing up the grits myth! LOL! We need to bury this one, along with 'birds exploding after eating rice'. What are some other long-lived gardening or yardening myths? One of my favorites is about moles: some proclaim that a sure-fire method in killing moles is to stick thorny rose stems into their tunnels. The theory is that mole's blood does not coagulate and they bleed to death. (false...this is a complete myth)...See MoreGrits vs Cornmeal?
Comments (2)As I recall, my mother made hominy by boiling corn in a lye solution. So I suppose that would alter at least some of the chemistry and, for sure, any fungal content of the corn. In my mind, that would create serious doubt as to whether corn and hominy would give the same results....See MoreWANTED: Sadly lacking true grit(s)...
Comments (18)Beez, I seriously love everything. I am sure I will like grits, the list of things I won't eat is pretty limited (unfortunately!). They are after all, another butter delivery mechanism! I may have to plan a trip to visit you and the mill someday. How funny the potter is from Maine. I don't recognize the signature on the bottom but I'll be keeping my eyes peeled. It is a beautifully made piece. The towel/mitt set is like sunshine in the kitchen -- so welcome after last week when we got nearly 30" of snow! Funny you should mention the Thai/Asian thread. last night I had difficulty reaching escape velocity at the office, so the hubs met me for dinner at our favorite Thai place and we enjoyed the Kao Soi noodle bowl I wrote about. It reinforced my need to be able to make that dish at home, it is so delicious. Thanks again, Beez! That package really made my day....See MoreCooking shrimp and cheese grits...
Comments (27)Here's another take on cornmeal, grits and hominy grits. Cornmeal = ground corn. Grits = corn ground a little courser than cornmeal and cooked like cornmeal mush. Hominy grits = ground hominy cooked like cornmeal mush. Confusingly, hominy grits are often (usually?) referred to simply "grits". If that isn't confusing enough, there is also corn flour, masa harina (hominy ground fine as flour), fresh masa, polenta, etc. There is much debate (not just here) over the meaning of the names and the correct or tastiest way to prepare each of these. I have my own strong preferences and am still experimenting and learning. Feel free to correct me. Can we at least agree that it's all corn? Jim...See Moreci_lantro
