Need help! Sprouted seeds dying after 2-3 days
Comments (9)Hey Ryan, When I grow trees from seed I don't usually have problems like these. Long ago when I started seeds in regular garden soil I had all kinds of damping off problems. Once I realized that seeds germinate better in soil-less mixes and have less chance of soil pathogens I gave up on garden soil. Since then I've had very few problems germinating seed. OK, we KNOW that contamination is not coming from the plastic seed trays since you washed and disinfected them between planting cycles. Your trays should be fine. Occasionally some seeds might have some tiny, invisible fungi on them that can quickly grow in a wet environment. As a precaution, you might want to consider a brief (5 or 10 minute) soaking in 50/50 mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide just before planting. This should kill fungi on the outside of the seed coats, just in case there is any. That would eliminate the possibility that the seed coats are infected. I guess at this point Id be tempted to toss away the MG soil you have and try something else. I usually start my seeds in a loose mix of fine pine bark and perlite with good results but there are many different seed starting soils on the market, including one by Schultz that I've heard good things about. I'll add a link. Hope this helps. TYG Here is a link that might be useful: Seedling soil...See More3-Day Weekend?
Comments (17)Thank you... they're grown on a fence with north/south orientation, so they get full sun pretty much all day. Yes, exactly so... Clematis are arranged in Groups... they have different bloom times, and different pruning is required as some bloom on new wood, while others bloom on old wood, etc... That's the part that always confuses me... the groups, and the pruning! I have seen some Clematis sold in smaller pots with decorative little trellises, sort of like miniature roses are sold, as gift plants... and while I'm sure you could grow them indoors for a time, I think they're best planted in the garden where they can spread out and get the seasonal dormancy they need. They like their faces in the sun and their roots kept cool. I have a Jackmanii, too, and I love the huge flush of blooms it produces! I do wish it would bloom for a longer period of time, though. There are so many different varieties of Clematis available now... so many bloom shapes and colors... it's a fantastic plant, whether trained on a fence or trellis, or allowed to creep around on the ground... Here's a white flowered variety peeking through a Knockout Rose... This past weekend, I went along to help my husband with a plumbing job for a friend... the original job went well, but we ran into another plumbing problem that needs fixing, in order for the entire system to work as it should. We got home late on Sunday... and loaded up the car with tools on Monday to go finish the job... and wouldn't you know it... the car broke down a few miles from home! I walked back, got another vehicle for the rescue, and we towed our little Ford home... I'm in no physical shape to be walking that far in that kind of heat... today, I'm one hurtin' puppy! So... I guess you could say my weekend was a bust. A costly bust!...See MoreOur Second Problem!!! (and it's only day 3!)
Comments (19)[Warning: Repeat of update in the "Recirculating Vent" thread] Update: After much "discussion" about this and other issues, our kitchen is back on and yes, we are venting outside! We ended up with 3 outside plumbers giving us estimates. Two different solutions were proposed. One plumber (the $550 estimate) involved tapping into the toilet waste pipe w/a sanitary T. However, the other plumbers were uncertain that it would pass inspection, so they proposed tapping into the 2nd floor main waste pipe and venting up the wall into the attic where, it turns out, we have a "whole house" vent stack. The 2 estimates we got for that were $925 & $1,000. We went w/the $925 bid since they also offered drywall repair (another $500) and the other one did not. However, we did not need it as the bay to the attic was completely clear so they were able to feed the vent pipe up to the attic w/o cutting through any drywall. Our contractor kept saying there's no way that will pass code/inspection and that we HAD to go through the roof to be sure it would pass...(they wanted $4,800!) Well, we went w/the $925 bid/solution anyway and yes, it did pass inspection...I even asked the inspector about the toilet waste pipe solution and he said that would have passed as well! There's much more to the story, if you're interested it's on the Kitchens Forum...my "Kitchen Saga" threads. BTW...while we were at it we also replaced all the polybutelyne water pipes...another unexpected expense! (But it was better to do it now while most of the ceilings and walls are opened up...costs less in the long run.) Comments (88)We love this range.... & would buy it again! As with every new appliance, there are new things to become familiar with.... the induction cooktop is very straight-forward (and we had used an induction plate prior to buying this range, so induction wasn't a new concept to us), but the oven seems to maintain more humidity than my old one, but I have learned to use convection more since I last posted... so for things that i want a drier or crisper result, I use the convection option, or open the door a bit to let the extra moisture/steam out. I haven't found it takes noticeably longer to preheat than my old self-cleaning oven, but I see others have complained of this. The oven interior is slightly smaller than my old one, but I've gotten used to that, too, now. I recently used the bread-proof setting which worked like a charm. If I had a wish list, I would put a small hob at the front, since I use the small hobs a lot, and if you are stirring or tending the pot, it is nice not to have to reach back quite so far for an extended period of time. There weren't many choices available in my region when I bought this range. It was either this one or a GE cafe induction range. I'm sure there are more to choose from now, but I'm better with fewer choices, otherwise I'd never be able to make up my mind! Wait for the big sales if you can... stores sells these for $1000 - $1500 off the regular price, & I've seen these big appliance sales more than once each year....See MorePawprint
