3-Day Weekend?

It's a holiday weekend in the U.S. of A. After having a .5 day weekend about a week back I'm so happy to be having a 3-dayer to recover from the week from heck. Do you have three days off? What are you up to? (retirees need not reply--you people really grate my cabbage with your abundant free time and your "I'm busier than when I worked tee hee!" ;p)

The co-conspirator and I haven't made any concrete plans but we've gotten as far as saying "let's actually do something." Believe me, that's progress. I'm thinking some geocaching, hiking, bird-watching are serious possibilities. After dining out three nights in a row we're due to settle in and do some home-cookin' too. The garden can go to the blazes for all I care. I suppose laundry has to take place at some point.

Just finished the monthly orchid society bulletin and am now working on the last show accounts. Toting up the moular and making out cheques.

Just about to water my orchids, maybe do a bit of repotting .
Have to tidy things because the Dragon Woman has invited people over tomorrow.
Gee i'm busier than when i worked. LOL Who has any free time???.

Just got back from spending a week away. Two days in Boston and four in Maine. We had arranged to have some major construction done in July, but contractor didn't show. He called on our last day of work to announce he was starting on Monday - first day of our vacation.

I had to move all my plants out of my sun-room and left them on my deck. We left for our 'vacation' while he tore my house apart. Came home to a mess, fried orchids and 'sticker shock.'

I am so glad we don't go back to work until Wednesday. Tomorrow I need to see what plants can be salvaged and move them all to some shade. It hasn't rained one drop in over a month so all my gardens, including vegetables are parched. I can't believe what a disaster this vacation turned out to be. I also can't believe it is almost over.

I need a vacation!

We finally got some rain this morning, maybe a couple inches. It is so dry that all the water was absorbed, just like a dry sponge soaked it up. I saw one rain puddle, all the rest of the water was used by the thirsty trees and plants. We could use a couple more inches in a couple days but are only supposed to get heat. We got in the first 500 bales of horse hay. Supposed to do another 500 this weekend. Went pretty quick with the elevators. Hay looks pretty nice so far, good and dry. I have been working on clearing fence again, weed whacking. Also got the drainage ditch cleaned out. We get Canary grass and Cattails that really grow well in the early summer. Ground is too wet to cut them out then, so I have to wait for late summer and dry times. I cut everything down to the dirt. DD raked all the trimmings out so water should have a clean run to drain off this fall. I have a feeling the fall rains will be strong, lots of water, so I want the ditch draining well, doing it's job quickly. We are at the bottom of the drain before it goes into the tube, so any backup fills my paddock and the neighbors front barnyard. Lake O'Dell we call it! I leave the cattails that are right in front of the tube going under the road to Lake O'Dell. Water pressure is like a huge hose, with all the backed up water pushing behind. Cattails soften the water exit flow, keep draining water from washing out the whole side of the 6ft ditch, eroding the fence. Ditch makes 3 corners in short space, slows water down, so is apt to overflow there when we have large rainfalls. Clean bottom of my ditch allows draining water to just fly into the big tube, drain away. Nothing to catch leaves, make a dam in water flow. Put up a bushel of tomatoes, did half dried, half frozen. I am not a canning person. Too much work for me! I did a lot of canning with my mom as a kid. We canned and froze everything we could. Better food, cheaper to feed 4 growing kids all winter. We all went to pick or get whatever we were fixing, helped prepare it, peeling, seeding, whatever. I think I just did too many jars then. The dried tomatoes take a bit longer, but make good snacks, kids like them in lunches. I experimented with some extra herbs from the garden, really added some nice flavor. DD made some of the trays, flavors will be a surprise to all! Also did a bushel of peppers into the freezer. They go pretty fast. Cut in half, remove seeds and wash. Then I quartered them and ran the pieces thru the food processor slicer. Kind of julianned them, small pieces but not bits. Bagged them and froze. We add the frozen pieces to food we are cooking, good color and flavor. I had a bag sealer to use, didn't work too well. Seals on the bags were erratic. I will be returning it and getting the better brand. Should have listened to my mom, she told me cheap one wouldn't work. She likes her sealer a lot. Have been getting really good sweet corn at the Farmer's Market. Horses love the husks, we do limit their quantity to eat. Our market is getting some very odd food, fun to experiment with new stuff. Eggplant in every color EXCEPT purple. The long purple striped, white eggplants are very good. Also round white ones. Black tomatoes are the BEST for eating out of your hand! She said they are a heritage plant, Black Russians. She had a bunch of funny looking ones, every one was delicious. Cantaloupe are coming in, I use them for desert, with a scoop of ice cream. So much good stuff, I take the kids' old red wagon while shopping the market now. Husband is also bringing home garden produce from his customers. Regular tomatoes, cucumbers and zuccini. We are eating very healthy this time of year. Apple and pears are getting ripe in the fencerows, horses slurp them down first thing every day. The old horse is saying winter is coming, starting to get new hair. I plan on giving her a bath if it does get up over 80F this weekend. Cool nights are making it good sleeping, morning is getting later every day. DD is enjoying her riding lessons, showing progress. Her horse is a lot more lively in this cooler weather. He has been off work a month with his EPM treatment. Seems more comfortable. Hope he is cured, though we hear a lot of horses have a relapse, need another course of meds. Foal is growing like a weed, shoulders are about armpit high now, we can lean on him. We are working on him being seperate from mom, want to wean this next month. He is kind of dragging her down, thin for her. He looks very well, almost fat with no grain at all. He is eating hay well, pasture is pretty burned up. Mare is not bred back, which could be from her not being in a gaining condition to get in foal. We will try breeding her again next year, too late this season. With the rainfall I will get a couple days off watering the trees! Our big ones are looking rough, dry edged leaves. Shrubs also needed water, along with the perennials. I only water some, when they look real droopy. Supposed to be tough growers. I do have some new trees going, they also needed drinks, no deep roots. Those aqua cones that fit on pop bottles, do seem to work keeping far out trees going with a steady moisture. I only fill those once a week for the little pines beyond the hose length.

Our place use to be an old hog farm with lots of outdoor dirt lots. They had concrete pads with waters and feeders sitting on them. When they dug the basement for our house, regraded the ground and the field around us, I think they just buried the concrete pads or they broke it up in large chunks and buried it with all the dirt. When I was putting up my first big high tunnel I hit the concrete slab about 1.5 to 2.5 feet down. I tried everything but renting a jack hammer to break it up. I was able break a big chunk of it off, but I only went 6 to 10 inches more and hit more. So I dug the hole bigger around and just concreted it in. Fast forward to this spring when I was putting up my new high tunnel and I drove in all the posts and didn't have a single problem. Then I was digging post holes to set the endwall 4 by 4's and I encountered another hunk of concrete 2 feet from my corner post for the high tunnel. I was incredibly lucky to lay out the tunnel and not hit the concrete with the ground post. Well I was only able to dig down about 12 to 18 inches so I made the hole larger and I was able to use concrete bolts and some angle iron and I just bolted the bottom of thewood post to the concrete pad. I know for a fact that post isn't moving anytime soon. Some day I will cuss myself if it has to come out. This concrete was about 35 feet away from the other concrete piece. If I had time and if I didn't already have the whole structure up (with the exception of this post, I would have dug out that concrete or at least defined it's size and decide what to do. Long story short, you never know what you are going to hit when you dig holes or drive posts. Do your best to get the posts in the ground as far as they can go. Sounds like you have lots of work ahead of you. Good idea on sliding them around a few inches, that shouldn't hurt anything. Jay

I know I'm a bit late to this post but it was so helpful to me in choosing my granite for our kitchen renovation. I wanted the white marble, but knew it wouldn't work for our family. Maybe someday. For now, I went with River White and just had it installed. I love it and it doesn't have any browns in it which was what I was going for. Oh Dearest Buehl ! You did it again and I am soooo grateful! Using your advise on one of the posts about missing posts, I used the "site:ths.gardenweb.com" along with the word "Overwhelmed" and my post popped up first on Google's page! I promise! I promise that one day, maybe not in the near future, but one day..... I am going to be able to come here and offer advise, opinion or just an atta boy to someone else who is overwhelmed in the middle of a kitchen redo, just like I've been helped with such wonderful words from all of you! Shelayne, Bless your heart...Thank you, sincerely....Thank You! LasCaTx, Thank you! I'm so glad you said that.....that you don't think it's as dark as you were picturing it. Me either! And bruuuther, is that a load off my mind, at least for right now. :) To read what happened to you, I got shivers...like it was happening to me all over again! Wonder if that's considered "Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome"? Not making light of PTSS in ANY way but when I read here of others having similar problems I actually feel myself tighten up, like I did when I read your story too. You said "Only an insurance company would consider ripping out walls and slab foundations to find leaking pipes you couldn't know were there to be regular maintenance" OMG, We've said something similar so many times since this happened! Regular maintenance means you can access it rather easily or at least with not too much labor/expense, to check on it, maybe once a year, once every two years. Were we supposed to jack-hammer into our foundation on a regular basis to make sure our pipes were still pristine and not rusting out? LOL Or, as my hubby is now very fond of saying when he gets on his soapbox about our insurance company : "That F*&%^* company will step over a dollar to pick up a dime!" The insurance company could have reimbursed us for the plumber and the work from the beginning and saved almost three more weeks of the water continuing to leak, causing more damage. It was during that almost three weeks that the mold and mildew started to form. It's the mold/mildew remediation company the HO insurance HAD to end up paying for.....The remediation of all the mold, mildew, asbestos, air quality testing, fans, humidifiers, special disinfecting agents, saws and other woodworking tools to remove studs in the walls that were too far damaged and specialized dumping of mold/mildew/asbestos containment bags........ to perform all that work for almost a month.....I saw the bill: Almost $9000. As grandkidlet would say "duh!" Oh, our HO insurance also paid for the cameras, the sensors, the specialized laser/computer gadgets to find the leak......for three different companies to come out and find said leak. Leak could not be located. They could say positively there was water under the foundation but they couldn't locate the area it was coming from. Not that I'm happy, IN NO WAY am I happy to hear your story or the previous stories of it happening to others. But reading them lets me know there ARE people out there that will understand when I have these little mini-meltdowns. They've been there, the frustration of living like this, the frustration of dealing with all these different companies.....wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Oh KitchenAddict, You are sooo right! It DID Calm me and I was able to get so much done this weekend and I can actually see a light at the end of the tunnel because everyone here, by posting, pitched in and helped me change my perspective, my priorities....and that's what I needed most. I walked through the kitchen a hundred times since Friday night (ok, maybe not 100 times but it felt like it as that is the main back door to get to the tools) and by Saturday late afternoon I didn't even give the color a second thought...it's as if it had been there the whole time. Not nearly as shocking as the blotches of testing we did on the wall that had me looking like a very confused parakeet. *blink blink* And to add a plus to a plus, we had almost 2 full gallons left of my favorite paint of all time...my go-to paint when it comes to ceilings, trim, porch furniture, etc..... Pony Tail in a semi. So what the heck, we tried it on the ceiling of the kitchen and I'm in love! Most folks think the chip of the Pony Tail paint makes it look really dark but when we used it on our bedroom/bathroom trim, everyone thought we had used an off-white/Navajo white. The Pony Tail on the ceiling of the kitchen actually 'calmed' the whole room down if you can understand what I'm trying to say. So we are going ahead with it and using it on the underside of the bulkhead over the pass-through, on the lowered ceiling of the eat-in area of the kitchen and of course, the ceiling. You know, you are so right...now that I think about it. You said the color is versatile. I was sitting here thinking of some of my decor from the damaged kitchen and I'm thinking that almost everything I had in there...decorative platters, little framed art, etc. can go in this kitchen with this color. This color could almost be considered a neutral...if one likes bold neutrals, that is. lol Neighbors? Ooohhhh noooooo, not even close....I've seen your magnificent kitchen. I'm what they call 'on the other side of the tracks'. lol I'm in the neighborhood of the 1065 sq. ft. 56 year old tract homes, every fourth house has the same 3 bedroom/ 1 bathroom floor plan ('cept ours cuz 35 years ago the previous home owners added on a large back bedroom/bathroom/small family room), making ours a whopping 1450 sq. ft. There are two types of folk in my neighborhood....those that hit the floor when they hear a loud bang or those that run outside to see what's going on cuz they're nosy. *smile* So even if I won the lottery, in this neighborhood there is no way I would bother adding beautiful granite or soapstone, or marble, or a high-ticket range, or...well, you get the picture. It's the old "can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear" situation. But reading your posts for the last year or so, I sure would find it a wonderful day to sit across from you having a cuppa....but we'd do it at your house, k? *smile* Oh Julie, Words work miracles....thank you so much for yours. As I'm copying these latest responses I'm going to highlight in bold, so that I can see it right away when I glance over......"I am AMAZING and have done an INCREDIBLE job!".....My new mantra! *smile* BoxerPups, Always had a special place in my heart for Boxers. My first pup ever was a boxer...named him SkuttleButt. Cyber Magic....Love that! LOL But can you imagine? I was at one of my lowest points in, well, I can't remember when I felt so low. That was just last week. And here it is, Sunday night, paint is on the walls, the ceiling, all I have to get done tomorrow is all the little cutting in of the over-spray from the spray gun. Any other touch-up of the paint, like others have said on this topic, can get done after we have a somewhat working kitchen. If time allows I'll continue scrubbing the slate tiles tomorrow. That stuff is really dirty coming out of the box! I've got 110 down, 70 to go. My arms feel like lead weights tonight but it's such a good feeling to have accomplished so much! A tip: Never place drying slate tiles, 20 high, stacked on an old wood outdoor Adirondack chair. (wasn't purdy. don't ask. lol) Did some looking tonight on the computer for a decent price for a combo Slate Enhancer/Sealer. Talk about sticker-shock...ouchie! From the reviews I've read of several enhancer/sealers, I think I'm going to go with the Aqua Mix Enrich N Seal....unless of course someone has rave reviews of another brand? OMG, look what I've gone and done....I've created a mini-novel here! My apologies. Having been forced into "retirement" by illness and an accident, my time is mine... but I'm not able to plan too far in advance. I do what I can, when I can. I do have solid plans to attend the Chicagoland Orchid Festival this fall, though. That, I'm attending no matter what!

Today, I got a little bit of grass cut, and I hope to finish up tomorrow. Laundry Mountain is staring at me, as is its neighbor, Dish Mountain! I'll try to tackle those...

The husband has plans to do a small plumbing job for a friend, and I'll go along as "Tool Manager", to help!

That's my weekend! Oh, and I'll hover over my orchids for a bit... I really should re-pot some of my bulbs, too... and garden prep for winter will begin shortly, so I should think about what needs to be done there, too...

With the normal housework that I've been putting off, and the plumbing job I'll help with, well... Labor Day Weekend will be filled with... labor! It's aptly named!

This is such a sad, but gorgeous time of year. Even though the garden is past its peak, I still love working out there. The days are certainly numbered and I want it to look its best until the bitter end.

Went to the farmers market today and loaded up on good stuff - corn, tomatoes, lettuce, broccoli, strawberries, raspberries. Since I really have no interest in cooking during the summer months (which is kind of a shame since everything it at its peak and cheap), I'm going to do some good simple meals. Even went to the grocery store and bought some of those yellow, little shortcake things. I know there are better options for shortcake, but I love those little numbers. Raspberries & strawberries together with a whole mess of cream should be delightful.

The only other thing I should do this weekend is get the second floor porch ready for the orchids. The sun has shifted and nights are starting to get cool. They'll need to go up there until the final move into the house for winter.

Some things are past their peak out in my gardens, it's true... but I have to say... all the Roses, and a few Clematis, plus the Rudbeckia and Russian Sage, are all in full flower right now! I'm very impressed by the Miniature Roses I put in this past spring!

I forgot that I also need to set up this little table top fountain to help with humidity, and rearrange the indoor plants, so the few that went out can have their spots back.

Autumn is a beautiful time of year... but it signals the coming of the cold weather... which I don't deal with very well, physically. Winter to me is more pain! I'm glad I have my indoor garden to take my mind off it, and keep the winter blues at bay!

My 3 day weekend started Friday night at the Nine Inch Nails concert. Not sure if any of you are fans, but the show was amazing and it was well worth being crushed and having difficulty breathing for a moment.

Sunday is hiking and running with a friend in the park. Monday will e spent buying a few needed things for the vacation I begin on Friday, where I plan to purchase an orchid or two.

Just came back from a 2 week long vacation in California...didn't make it to a single orchid place which has me a little pissed but oh well - traveling with family entails sacrifices. Before I left on this vacation, I had ominous feelings concerning the immediate time after my two weeks away. I almost felt like I didn't want to leave because the time spent catching up afterwards would be soo hellish. Thank goodness for the long weekend.

Like Jane I had some orchid misfortunes. Before leaving I rigged up a misting system and dunked all the plants real well. Everything was automated, but because of the rush job (yes, I was screaming "ONE MORE SECOND" as I frantically filled the reservoir for the mister while my ride to the airport honked outside) I neglected to ensure that the mist was hitting everything perfectly...so despite my 2 hurried test runs, I came back to find some things bone dry despite the automated 3x per day misting. No casualties, but some growths definitely severely set back. A depressing welcome.

Schoolwise, I have 2 wks of work to catch up on before the next week unfolds, not to mention cleaning out my house downtown for the new tenants for Sept 1. In my own home here, I'll be busy cleaning the toilets which have been neglected (gross), vacuuming, like Jodik I have my own little laundry mountain to deal with, and I'll be sorting out my wardrobe so I can get rid of all those clothes I no longer wear. I'm going to be spending a whole lotta time indoors once winter shows it's face, so I want my nest to be neat and tidy - being cooped up in a messy home for months is torture.

The garden's a mess - our cherry tree is dropping leaves prematurely, I have bindweed everywhere on the lawn (how the hell do you get rid of that stuff), my compost bin is lethargic and there's some sort of earwig infestation going on... so that'll be a good workout. But at least it's nice and cool, so it should be a pleasant time. This will be the last autumn I spend in this garden (we're moving), so it will be especially sad - I'll have to say good bye to all the nice plants I put in two years ago, most of which are finally getting established this season. I can only imagine what the place will be like next year.

Jodik - you have clematis in flower? Mine were done months ago! : )

Forgot about the most important event of the weekend. Viewing the last episode of season 5 of the wire.

When there is nothing much else on TV I'll borrow the series again from daughter and this time watch the lot with sub-titles on.

The mess of a garden is in spring bloom and it looks pretty good. It is mostly self sown and the same stuff comes up every year. I just do a lot of transplanting.

Wasn't the final season just great? I finished the 5th about a week ago and was truly sad that was the end. I know it was fiction, but all that political stuff rang so true. Being a bit of a neighborhood activist myself, I have a potential clash planned with my city council person next week. If I succumb to some unfortunate "accident", the orchids are up for grabs.

Cal, just to jump in on your question to Jodik, the clematis I have in the front yard garden was just in bloom. I think the flower may have fallen. This Clematis seems to be very sporadic. Flowers for a couple weeks or so, then nothing for weeks, and then another flower will pop.

Calvin I have several clematis that will also rebloom in the fall. Madame duBouchard (light pink) is one I can remember the name on because the name tag didn't fade :>) I also have a small blue bloomer, a small magenta bloomer, another that is a dark pink bell shaped bloom. They are all blooming now after a spectacular bloom this spring.

Sweet Autumn clematis is a fall bloomer with a great fragrance but the blooms (very small white) only last about two weeks and it is a "weed". I have to constantly stay on top of it to keep it from creeping over to neighbors and eating them.

Anything that can bloom in the drought we are having, is a great plant.

Same experience with clematis here. Most of mine have continued to throw out a few blooms all summer and will probably have a larger flush of flowers later this fall.

Sweet Autumn just finished and I MUST remember to cut it back or all those seeds will sprout next year and take over the State of MN. Heavenly scent, but my Lord is it invasive!

My Clematis tangutica is just starting to bloom. Doesn't look like a clematis at all with all those little, yellow bells.

Several of my Clematis bloom in late spring/early summer, and continue to bloom sporadically for a while... there's quite the array of Clematis types growing on a large fence we have... some are early, some mid-season, and some later... I couldn't list the names, but right now there are several beauties blooming! Many have lots of unopened buds!

There are two different pink bell-shaped ones, a deep purple, a white with a fuzzy center, a pink with a fuzzy center... all in heavy bloom now. The tags are either faded or gone, so I'm not sure of names. What I do know is that the different types require different pruning techniques... some bloom from old wood, some from new... it has always confused me somewhat!

The only one we don't seem to have is the Autumn type with the clouds of white blooms... I've had it in the past, though, and it's wonderfully scented! An aggressive grower, to say the least!

I really need to learn more about them...

Wow Jodik those are impressive! Aren't there different 'groups' of clematis out there that require different pruning practices, and could it be that bloom habits differ depending on group?

I only have one clematis - it's the common 'Jackmanii' and it produces a huge flush of blooms for about 2-3 weeks in mid summer, and then it's over. I'm not too happy with the shape of the flowers (yours are much nicer!) so I'm looking for replacements..for the new garden that is.

On a related note,has anyone grown clematis indoors? Is that possible?

(Maybe I should move this discussion to the clematis forum..)

PS - so I only got done half the things I was hoping to get done this weekend...luckily I planned for that so I don't feel too bad about myself : )

Thank you... they're grown on a fence with north/south orientation, so they get full sun pretty much all day.

Yes, exactly so... Clematis are arranged in Groups... they have different bloom times, and different pruning is required as some bloom on new wood, while others bloom on old wood, etc...

That's the part that always confuses me... the groups, and the pruning!

I have seen some Clematis sold in smaller pots with decorative little trellises, sort of like miniature roses are sold, as gift plants... and while I'm sure you could grow them indoors for a time, I think they're best planted in the garden where they can spread out and get the seasonal dormancy they need. They like their faces in the sun and their roots kept cool.

I have a Jackmanii, too, and I love the huge flush of blooms it produces! I do wish it would bloom for a longer period of time, though. There are so many different varieties of Clematis available now... so many bloom shapes and colors... it's a fantastic plant, whether trained on a fence or trellis, or allowed to creep around on the ground...

This past weekend, I went along to help my husband with a plumbing job for a friend... the original job went well, but we ran into another plumbing problem that needs fixing, in order for the entire system to work as it should. We got home late on Sunday... and loaded up the car with tools on Monday to go finish the job... and wouldn't you know it... the car broke down a few miles from home! I walked back, got another vehicle for the rescue, and we towed our little Ford home...

I'm in no physical shape to be walking that far in that kind of heat... today, I'm one hurtin' puppy! So... I guess you could say my weekend was a bust. A costly bust!
