Comments (3)I recommend David Austin roses. All 30 of my David Austins did fabulously well over last winter, with absolutely no protection except the snow cover, in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Canada. Look through the David Austin site, and choose ones that are more hardy. Even though they are all hardier, some are even more hardier than others. Abraham Darby for instance gets killed back to the ground, and eventually dies. Fair Bianca is sometimes even cane hardy, and gradually gets bigger and bigger....See MoreNEW: 4th of July Seed Swap!
Comments (87)Actually, the lady pictured in the "Rooster Crow" photo I posted is my SIL, Sharla, not my wife, Elly. But yes, Sharla is constantly crocheting,...mostly projects to be entered into competition at our August county fair. She used to win cash prizes along with her ribbons. Anymore, though, due to professed failing funds, winning competitors receive only ribbons these days. While Elly, obviously, crochets as well, she's nowhere near as prolifically dedicated to the practice as her older sister. Just now, however, Elly is working to complete a poly-chromatic afghan to enter into county fair competition on the occasion of the fair's 100-yr anniversary. While the fair board currently claims it is actually functioning in the black as of late, we'll see what ultimately happens....See More4th of July
Comments (4)Hi-- Yes, I purchased the "4th of July Hybrid" from my local greenhouse as a seedling; I'm not sure if it's the Burpee variety or not, but it looks healthy. It is still in the blossoming stage though; it didn't get transplanted into its current container until I think May 16th. It's about 40" tall. I don't have any red tomatoes yet but my Better Boys are lightening up from dark green so they're coming along. I have tons of green cherry tomatoes too. I hardly ever get red tomatoes until the end of July (that would make sense since I think Early Girl/Better Boy are about 60 days), but again you're in zone 7 and I'm either in 5b/6a depending on which website you go to. I never put tomatoes in the ground before May 15th just in case. Have a great day! Thanks, Patti...See MoreQOTD - July 4th
Comments (8)Kate, that was thoughtful of you to post this for your fellow Americans to read. Being Canadian, I'm only aware of the general idea of the Declaration, but having celebrated my own country's birthday on July 1st I am very aware of how very, very lucky those of us on both sides of the border are that we live in such wonderful countries. Just a brief look at any newscast can reassure us of that. We aren't perfect, and have many problems to deal with from time to time, but we do have the rights to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of happiness. Happy Independence Day to you all!...See Morenippstress - zone 5 Nebraska
