4th of July

I'm just wondering if anyone else has planted this variety? I ordered these seeds from Burpee over the winter and started them from seed. They are now over 5' tall and are producing an abundance of tomatoes since a few days before the 4th. They're nice and sweet but very small, about the size of golf balls. I didn't realize they were so small until last week when I checked the Burpee site.

My hubby wants me to grow bigger ones next year. I grew 'Better Boy' last year but I didn't have any tomatoes until the end of July.

Can anyone recommend a large good flavored tomatoe that ripens early? Is 'Early Girl' the only one?

We grew the Early girl this year also and it was the first tomato before July 4th, however the Cheerokee Purple came in about 2 or 3 days later, had larger tomatoes and has produce far more tomatoes so far. I will grow both next year as well as all the other varietys we have.

I planted RIESENTRAUBE just a couple of weeks ago and already have lots of fruit.

My brother does not eat red meat, and so we never have that when we barbecue, which is often. I do not associate red meat with the 4th, but I do associate salmon with it. I think fish is very tricky to grill properly, and only fatty fish like salmon is really worth it, as lean fish, such as swordfish, will not get much smoke flavor, as that is stored mainly in the fat. It is also easy to overcook swordfish, making it dry, and so I always grill that indoors. However, I do love salmon grilled on the barbecue. I prefer pieces that have skin, and I season it with a tiny bit of salt & white pepper plus some dill (okay if it is dried), and then I rub it with avocado oil or grape seed oil on the side that does not have skin. When I grill it, I always start with the presentation side down (i.e., skin side up), and the grill must be oiled. When it releases from the grill, I flip it over and cook for about three minutes with the skin side down. Sometimes the skin gets stuck to the grill, but all of the fish will release, and I don't eat the skin anyway, although I have friends who do. If I grill any other fish, I put it in a grill basket so that it can be removed from the barbecue more easily, and it's easier to turn over this way. Our market sells chicken and turkey sausage that they make on site, and it is very good, and we barbecue that frequently also. You might want to look for some "gourmet" sausage, as that is very easy to cook and takes on a nice smokey flavor.

I'm just getting ready to hand-sew the binding to the back of this Eiffel Tower Panel quilt that I'm doing for a friend. I've been feverishly trying to get it done and sent. Other than that we are staying home, DH will light up the grill and smoke some sockeye salmon, roast some corn on the cob, sweet potatoes, and grill some broccoli and mushrooms with lemon. Yum! Larri, I absolutely LOVE Greek food, especially stuffed grape leaves, can I come, too? DH isn't as crazy about it, he'll eat it but never asks for it, so I'll leave him home. I do make some dishes occasionally - especially Greek salad and simple broiled lemon chicken breast. We have a very small franchise here that does the gyros, salads, rice bowls and they make this awesome side - feta fries - they are just too good to describe.

We always had them when we were kids. Supervised of course, but with Reservation shops in all 4 directions, the only thing limiting what could be bought was the budget. It's been a lot of years since we've done much with fireworks ourselves. Our city would have a display (not this year) that we didn't even have to go out for, we could view it from above and across the river at the living room windows. Current city restrictions are 9 AM until midnight today only for igniting any kind of fireworks and all the 'good stuff' is banned now. I've been hearing fireworks noises for the last three days though, and off and on all day today.

@Sueb20 what books are you reading? Any good? I just had a week at the beach and came home Saturday morning. D17 was able to come for a few days then went home with Dh midweek to work, and Dh had an unavoidable/unexpected business meeting in Atlanta. My sons both had to work so it ended up being a vacation mostly for myself! It was actually quite nice. The weather was absolutely perfect. Nothing exciting planned today. Another beautiful day. I was up early and took one of my dogs for a long walk. Dh is smoking a pork butt so we will have pulled pork, corn on cob and potato salad for dinner, We can walk to the end of our block to see the city fireworks tonight out over the bay. D23 flew from her home in San Diego to a wedding outside of Denver over the weekend. No line at security in SD and no flight issues on the way to Denver. They fly back to SD tonight so fingers crossed they have no problems getting home.

Yes, I purchased the "4th of July Hybrid" from my local greenhouse as a seedling; I'm not sure if it's the Burpee variety or not, but it looks healthy. It is still in the blossoming stage though; it didn't get transplanted into its current container until I think May 16th. It's about 40" tall.
I don't have any red tomatoes yet but my Better Boys are lightening up from dark green so they're coming along. I have tons of green cherry tomatoes too. I hardly ever get red tomatoes until the end of July (that would make sense since I think Early Girl/Better Boy are about 60 days), but again you're in zone 7 and I'm either in 5b/6a depending on which website you go to. I never put tomatoes in the ground before May 15th just in case.

I grow 4th of July every year. I transplant it into wall-o-water's around the first of March (my last frost date is April 15th). I always have tomatoes by the first of June. They are small and they are not the most flavorful, but after a winter of either store bought or nothing, they are worth it. They produce non-stop until frost and have excellent disease resistance at least in my garden. The vines will get very long. I have four of them out in the garden now and they are loaded with fruit of all sizes, having set even during almost 15 straight days of 90-100 degree temps.
