Need some help with some plant ideas to fill space.
Comments (5)It looks like you don't have enough corn for good pollination. My understanding is that you need at least 4' x 4' of corn for decent pollination. Do you have a plan on how you will get to the plantings in the back for care & harvesting? I think you might want to consider some stepping stones at least. Consider also that your plants will bush out - when we grew cukes & beans on a trellis in a bed 2 feet from the fence they bushed out so much there wasn't much room to get behind them. Also, I have never grown okra, but I've heard the plant can be irritating to the skin. I think it gets pretty big, too. You might think about putting it together & somewhere you won't have to come into contact with it until you want to. Why are you mixing things up? Are you trying to avoid cross pollinating varieties, or going for aesthetics? Or is it for another reason? I would consider putting same plants together because they will have the same needs & you can more easily deal with them as a group. Beans are great & can be very productive. You could substitute them for the corn along the back. Perhaps you could do a block of a short variety of corn (so it doesn't shade other things too much) if you move things around a bit. I am not familiar with your growing area, so I'm not sure what else to add. I see you have cukes growing on the fence, but you have a line of them down into the bed. Will those get a trellis, or are you putting bush varieties in front? Definitely (IMO) put as much organic matter into your soil as you can. We have terrible soil here (sand), but my small gardens are looking lush. We found a local coffee shop that gives us bags of their compostable material regularly. We add that straight to the garden beds (coffee grounds, veggie scraps, egg shells) with some manure (we use quail because it is inexpensive & convenient). Also, we added in some peat moss & vermiculite the first couple of times we were turning over the beds. Hopefully someone with more expertise will give you some good tips. Best of luck!...See MoreSome photos of my Valentine decos
Comments (9)Thanks everyone for the kind words! I did make the centerpiece and had a mess when I got finished. This was the first time I used moss as a filler and wow, little pieces of that stuff gets everywhere! You couldn't really tell very much about the candle I used in the centerpiece, but it was heart shaped and had pink sparkly beads all over it. I think it was my favorite thing that I bought! I found the little silk rosebuds at Wal Mart. They were in small bunches and each one had all three colors of roses on it. That made it much easier for me to arrange it. I always have a hard time mixing colors in a centerpiece...it seems like I always end up with too much of one color. I think ya'll have the right idea of just setting the table for ourselves and forgetting the entertaining! I was exhausted by the time everyone was gone last night. Not only do we have to go shopping for the decos, but then we have to plan out the menu...then you've gotta decorate. After that comes the actual cooking...but then after all that, you've still got dirty dishes to wash! Yep, a caterer is sounding better every minute. LOL!...See MoreNeed some help with finalizing some appliance details
Comments (4)OK, I've made a little progress in narrowing my choices. I'm finalizing my cabinet order and need to pick certain elements to get the openings sized correctly. I've solve my microwave dilemma by hiding it behind a pocket door. I'm looking for a warming drawer that does not stick out too much from the cabinets. I'm using inset cabinetry and a fully integrated, inset panel will be very difficult in an island situation with a standard 24 inches of total depth (interior space of less). (I know the Dacor indoor/outdoor unit might work, but it may not be recommended.) I've looked at Miele SS, Dacor SS and GE Monogram. These all seem to stick out the least of all the choices. The problem is that these handles don't match anything but their own sister refrigerators and dishwashers. (I'm not getting the integrated Miele fridge) Here's my current configuration choices: Set 1 Thermador 36" range Thermador (Bosch) Dishwasher KA FD CD refrigerator, Pro Series KA or Thermador WD, with matching handle (not happy with this, these stick out so much... any alternatives?). Another possibility is the Dacor WD Set 2 CornuFe 90 Albertine Range Bosch Panel Front DW GE Monogram SS CD Fridge GE Monogram WD Set 3 Wolf 36" Range Bosch Panel Front DW Dacor WD KA CD BF Fridge Anything else I should consider? I'm also concerned with the venting requirements of the Thermador and Wolf ranges (let alone the higher BTU BS or Capital)....See MoreNeed some good Art Deco sources
