Must be no one likes antique brass . . .
Comments (38)I don't like shiny brass unless it's on a musical instrument. My circa 1990's house has it EVERYWHERE. Imagine my husband's surprise when I bought a bunch of shiny brass knobs and cup pulls from my local hardware store. They had filled a huge bathtub with all their discontinued knobs. This thing was almost overflowing. But the price was 2 knobs/pulls for a buck. So I did it. I was searching for a looooong time. I didn't dare check the clock, but several people came by and offered to help, So, my plan was to get solid brass, remove the lacquer and age/darken them. I've found the instructions online. Admittedly, I don't know if all the pieces I bought are solid. So, it's one great big experiment, we'll see how it turns out. I told my husband, if the color doesn't quite turn out, I'll just spray paint them with ORB spray paint and save up for the really good stuff. carrie_eileen I'm so disappointed to hear about Restoration Hardware and their lack of hardware. The store near me closed a little over a year ago. When I got their re-vamped catalog, I assumed it was the furniture and decor style they were changing and nothing else. I didn't realize they were changing everything....See MoreTalk me down... (thinking of a DR set that won't match house)
Comments (25)gscience, I just remembered your kitchen -- you have the blue Big Chill, right? I really like your kitchen and I see why you want a table like this one. It would fit your kitchen style really well; it's probably the closest thing to chrome dinette that you can get in wood. :) I am not getting into the chrome vs wood debate (I think they'd both work in your space) but I don't know how easy it is to find a chrome one that will seat 8 like this one; maybe that will help the decision. Or I know -- you can buy my old oak one (cheap!) and that'll force me to make a decision on a table for us. [big grin] [very very off topic] How are you liking the Big Chill? Were you able to see one in person before buying? We won't need a new fridge for a while longer (I hope), but I like the idea of a standalone fridge that doesn't need a fridge cabinet, and the Big Chills are pretty cool (sorry for pun...)....See MoreReplacing All Door Knobs - ORB or Antique Brass? Comments (17)live wire oak- Like happyafwife, in our area, ORB hasn't faded. It is used more often than not in new construction in the most upscale neighborhoods. That is why we felt 'safe' using it. I love the look of stained woodwork, too. But my old woodwork wasn't stained - it was a medium brown painted/glazed finish from the mid-1960's. After ~45 years and three owners, it looked terrible and needed to have something done. To strip and stain it all would have been cost prohibitive. So we opted to paint everything (cabinets, doors, baseboards, etc)a soft white. It makes the house look so much lighter and larger - I can't believe that too many potential buyers will be turned off by it....See Moresmudges on quartz countertops that won’t come off
Comments (27)Hi Ellen! Sorry for the delay in responding. The daltile rep came out and wiped it down with acetone which helped, but I foolishly thought it could be done a little more and did it myself, resulting in a pretty big dull spot next to my stove. Luckily, the placement of a cutting board right on top of the spot looks good so that is what I will be doing. The acetone definitely helped the smudges though! I should have just not gotten so overzealous and taken matters into my own hands further. You live and you learn! :)...See Morewritersblock (9b/10a)
