Saving potting soil in a trash can....plastic? Metal?

I had to give up most of my in-ground gardening, and this year turned to pots to get my flower fix. I spent a lot (for me) on potting mix, and want to save it for next year. I realize I may have to amend it in some fashion, but my question is about a suitable container.

I've read that one should save the soil in a galvanized trash can. I'm wondering if the moisture in the soil will damage the metal. Also, I have an unused plastic trash can that I'd like to use instead if the plastic will withstand the temperature changes. (I'm in the northeast.) I assume the plastic is heavy enough to do so, but you folks know more than I. Advice, please--thanks!

Here's the terrace garden in mid-summer.
