Did I just plant too close to the house

So I just planted a proc American Persimmon today. The original plan was to put it 30ft from the the back corner of the house. But as I was checking my measurements I thought if I moved it just a bit I could get it a little farther from the existing Silver Maple, so I moved the planting location a little further from the Maple. This put it at 25ft from the house. At the time I was thinking it should be fine since common persimmon is tap-rooted and isn't know as a tree with destructive roots. Of course now, after the fact, I'm having 2nd thoughts. Maybe I should just say 5 feet won't make much difference 30ft isn't some magic number. But I thought I'd just ask the community.

Not a threat to foundation unless foundation is poorly constructed. And it is 25 ft. away anyway. Main problem might be fallen fruit on roof, but, again, it's 25 ft. away - it won't even be hanging over the house until it has an average crown spread in excess of 50 ft.

Agree with Embothium. The damage tree roots can cause to the foundation is normally a red herring with modern houses. Fallen branches are a bigger problem, but American Persimmon is very strong wooded. Fruit could be messy if it is female. American Persimmon hates being moved...I'd leave well enough alone.

When planted in the ground, they can be successfully grown in Z7. I have one that has braided stems, to form a tree and a friend has one that is several years old, in the middle of his front yard, unprotected. The standard species form can become quite large. I have seen them in downtown Savannah, GA that are at least 15x15ft. There is a dwarf form, which is planted in the median of I-95 through GA, that only grows to about 5x5ft. in size. I doubt that animals would be interested in this plant, as it is one of the most poisonous plants in the world. But humans don't have the sensitivity to avoid toxins. Placed near the South facing foundation of a heated building and covered with frost cloth, burlap or a "shrub coat" and protected from cold winds, you might be successful in growing them as a garden plant. For insurance, take cuttings before first frost and root them indoors, for planting next year. Rb

I like it, and I would even paint the sidelights too. If you think, after a month or so, that it is too bright, paint it a more burnt orange tone. I think the lighter color looks great. (But I also want to paint my front door yellow - on a blue and shite house!)

Nick and Melike, Thank you both so much. I had called the nursery also and they said the Haas is a "semi-dwarf" (which I didn't know). Still, I was worried. I know my chance to give it more room is now, not later, so I was really considering just leaving it there (it's HEAVY), but digging another hole 2' away and joining the holes, then sliding the tree over. Lot of work. I read your comments last night and made the decision to Let. It. Be. It's adjusting well so far, and I don't mind pruning to keep it's size under control. Right now, there are over 50 avocados on it, some golf-ball sized, so it seems as if it will be quite fruitful even when small. Thank you both again! You saved me hours of sweating and an aching back. Love GardenWeb!

wayyy over thinking this.. lol .... imo.. you can plant anything 25 or 30 feet away ...

and personally.. i dont put much regard into the tap root discussions ....

Is there a need for me to 4th this? Give a link to this thread to whoever inherits or purchases your home and in 40 years we'll discuss pruning back the branches if they are dropping fruit on the house.
