Oleander - did I just buy a house plant?

Just up the street from me on someone's fron lawn today, was a perennial plants sale - one of those good faith ones where there's just a tin for the money on the table. I picked out some lovely healthy hostas, phlox and peonies, and then for only $1 each, two potted oleanders. I'm guessing from internet searches that it's a Nerium Oleander.. but it seems to be quite tropical - not a zone 6 plant.

I'm wondering if the previous owner digs them up every year or if they're kept inside... the two little pots I got look like small cuttings but they've got signs of buds. Or is there something I don't know, like a microclimate up the road, or a special variety that lives through Niagara winters?
