HST quilt finally finished!

This was a HST block of the month from years ago. I had just 12 blocks and wanted a larger quilt. I made a couple of extra blocks and arranged them with a lot of white space around. I sent it out for long-arm quilting. The backing and binding is Kona cotton solid turquoise.

It goes to a great aunt who turns 80 next month.

Just wanted to share the couple opening the quilt. The wedding was in Utah at a state park - beautiful setting. They opened "family" gifts on Friday night before the wedding. The bride was in tears, the groom overwhelmed. They were staying in the yurt and put the quilt on the bed immediately - and invited EVERYONE (100+ people) to come and see it. When I came to the crooked corners, I just kind of guessed at it. The rest of it worked well. I decided it was fine and went on down the road. I couldn't change it, so I might as well be happy with it. And I am. For my first quilt, I'm really pleased. Of course, there are several mistakes. On some, I was too far down the road to fix them. On others, I was tired of Mr. Seamripper. I learned a lot about cutting accurately (I also bought an Accuquilt.) and how much a small mistake gets bigger. Same with 1/4" seams. I've tried two different feet, the old thing you screw into the bed of machine (I'm into vintage machines) and painters tape. I bought a laser at Harbor Freight last week, but haven't figured out how to put it on the machine. So, all and all, my sewing and cutting skills are improving. Still lots of room left, though. bkay

Thank you, everyone. If you watch the video from Missouri Star, you'll see the cool way to cut the fabric so the stripes just match up naturally. That wasn't really a problem. I first started making it for a short friend. When I decided to make it for Gary, I decided it needed another row, since he is much taller. Either I was sloppy or the scraps just weren't able to line up the same way, as the last row stripes do not line up quite as well. I was really down to the last of the fabric and one block was just too small to force in. I took out the seams, cut each side back a bit and took scraps and added a piece to each side. Then mitered the corners again and it worked. Not sure I'll ever make another once of these, but I'm sure glad it's finished!

Vasu, I have never seen quilt blocks set like that.....and I LOVE IT! The quilt is so unique - not another one like it! It's so fresh looking and modern --- but also traditional. Love the colors and the border too. Don't you just love the versatility of HST?

The blank white spaces are perfect to showcase some quilting. Very very nicely put together. It's a beauty!

I love it. The layout is so creative and the colors are so crisp and fresh looking. The way you incorporated those two blocks into the border is great too.

I stand in awe! I shy away from large white (or light) areas because I don't know how to quilt them. Sending out is a good solution.

Thank you all for your kind and encouraging words. I agonized over this layout for months. Once the blocks were done, I took a picture of each block and used PowerPoint to try out different layouts.

I love the modern quilts but the ones that blend the traditional and modern in some way are the best.
