I am getting discouraged trying to find the right antiques...
Comments (20)Lots of great, encouraging information from other posters. Dig in and have fun. If you have an idea of the era in which you prefer to decorate, look specifically for dealers who specialise in your preferred era. They're much more likely not only to find what you want, but to KNOW what they're hunting for you. If your needs are simple, and you don't mind the occasional replica or "fixit" item, go to any local auction or estate sale you can find. These events are a blast! I love to buy a junky looking bit for my house. After a good clean and repair, it's a functional furnishing with character. I'd like some of these bits buried with me when I pass on! And you never know-you might find some incredible things and bargain prices. If you've got meticulous tastes, you'll search for the better auction houses. These also attract deep-pocketed dealers and collectors, so you'll pay a bundle for your purchases. These are also highly pleasing events, as you can chat with some of the biggest names in the trade. It's a great learning opportunity. And there's still the chance that you can score a great piece fairly cheap. It's not easy to find designers who fit into your preferences. They do exist! Bear in mind that designers insist on ridiculous discounts from dealers, often severely limiting their dealer base. Or the dealers mark up for sales to designers in order to meet a margin. We need to pay overhead and bills, buy inventory, and put food on the table, just like anyone else in business. (and we like to have a little something left over for fun!) If you want to lessen the legwork, a designer is key. If you want to spend years learning, meeting folk in the trade, and accumulating a knockout decor, do the legwork yourself, following the pointers offered by everyone else here. I promise it's vast fun! Like Linda C says: "Yeah!! Dude!! ....I am so addicted!! "...See MoreAm I going about this right to get more return air?
Comments (2)countryboymo, I totally agree with "cold in the winter and warm in the summer" as being a lack of proper airflow. The reason registers/grilles are twice the size of the ductwork is because there is a "Free area" factor with them. Registers/grilles are louvered and the louvers block airflow with translates to about 50%-60%. So a 14"x6" equals 84 sq in, and at 50% free area thats 42 sq in. The stud space at 3.5"x14" equals 49 sq in. A 3 ton unit should circulate aprox 1200 cfm and if the return is sized for 500 fpm then you would need 2.4 sq ft total free area (346 sq in) aprox seven 14"x6" returns. First I would address your situation with balancing dampers, each branch should have one, if not install them there easy to do. With all the dampers open, tweak down the rooms that may be over ventilated to force air into the rooms that are under ventilated. Stay Warm! Dan Martyn...See MoreAm I getting right estimate?
Comments (3)Thanks for the advice. #4 did it for me for $200, granted he is a handyman. Everything works now even though the job was not done upto the code. He used 1.5 inch (original size that was there when the house was build) piping instead of 2 inch, but I am okay with that for now....See MoreI am sewing drapery panels and I am having problems
Comments (3)Try turning your lining fabric around, not over, but bottom to top, pin, sew and see if this makes a difference. It might. You may have it going in a different direction than the first panel you sewed. Are you leaving your pins in and sewing over them? It's always heck to get things so long to come out "even" sometimes....See MoreAbid Raza Toronto Canada
