Comments (14)Nancy - Grown in part shade the seedling has a bud count of only 8-9. The neighbor's trees have grown taller and wider, and most of my seedling bed is shaded now. When I started these plants three years ago, the bed got nine hours of sun a day. The seedling is a three year old that bloomed for the first time last year. I don't know if I'll be able to prepare the new beds for selected seedlings. I fell about 10 days ago, wounding my elbow in several ways. I probably won't have full use of my right arm for another couple of weeks. Debra...See MoreLabor day Video !!!!
Comments (10)Thank you for the info! My feeder hangs beneath a sort of lath that extends in a V-shape from the roof of the house. Before I bought 11 years ago, someone planted a honeysuckle that I believe is Lonicera flava (not invasive) and it climbs the support that holds up lath and grows more like a tree about 12 feet tall. Lots of winding, hanging dead wood underneath. Not very pretty but the feeder hangs from the lath and the hummers love to perch on the tangled vines by their feeder to protect it from other hummers. My butterfly feeder hangs about 3' away and the rotting bananas attract the fruit flies. The hummers also like to snag these in mid-air and they are funny to watch. They get fruit flies, sugar water, and lots of flowers. They also try to dive bomb the butterflies so there is a swirl of both at virtually all times. The honeysuckle is also a host plant for the Snowberry Clearwing moths, aka hummingbird moths, that fly during the day. So I have tons of activity in a very small space. Love them all; they keep me smiling and chuckling at the antics. Susan...See MoreHappy Labor Day Weekend!
Comments (8)Ann - Eye surgery is on my list of things to do someday (when I have some spare money laying around) so I envy you a bit. Won't it be nice to see clearly again! You should plan a visit to a garden when it's done to celebrate and enjoy how well you can see. We cleaned out some very thorny brush in the fencerow over the weekend. My neighbor's black locust sends up shoots from its roots and I hadn't cut those back for awhile. The thorns on those things are HUGE. We lost a couple hedge trees in the ice storm in '07 that are still sending up thorny shoots from the stumps as well. After the ice storm, we used a tractor to pull out the stumps from a couple other hedge trees and should've done that with all of them but there was just sooo much clean up to do at the time and it didn't get entirely finished. There were lots of other little scrub trees coming up that needed to be cut out and weeds of course. It sure looks a lot nicer now. Hope everyone had a good weekend. Bonnie - you can start on my garage now. : )...See More
