I like the top one. The bottom one is interesting, but I think it would be too much for an entire backsplash. Love the colors, btw.

Oooh, thanks for playing around with the patterns, but I am not planning on using that narrower tile - that is just the sample size I got. I definitely wanted to do the light green tile in either 3 x 6 or 4 x 8. Thanks!

I like your second option. I've been deciding over a couple of choices and combining them, like you've done is a good solution.

I am leaning towards the second option, but I did the math and figured out how to center the pattern on the 19 1/2 in backsplash more like this:

Or, I could do the same thing but with maybe a 1/3 offset instead of the brick pattern like this:

I still can't find pictures of anything like this to get a better idea, though. I've googled everything I can think of. I think this would look pretty, but I guess I need some validation . . .

Can you post a photo of an inspiration kitchen look you are going for? Modern? Transitional? Traditional?

This is marble, but you can at least see the pattern with this kitchen by Sarah Richardson. If you search, she has a few kitchens she's done with similar backsplashes.

Could you insert one of your thicker rows [the 3 high stack] in the pattern.......I think it's a lot of a small pattern and for the whole area it doesn't give the anchoring or focal point that at least one row of the 3-high accent would. You have white and espresso which is a lot of contrast, and only thin rows of mini tiles seems like they'd just get lost....not offensive, but rather un noticed.

Thanks, designsaavy. I searched for more of her designs but didn't find too much that was similar. herbflavor, you think the little rows will go unnoticed? I figured it would give the whole backsplash some texture and shine. I don't want to combine the two patterns, but I could go back to the idea of the thicker rows. Nightowl, I have lots of inspiration pictures collected and some have traditional subway tiles, others have mosaic tiles. I'll post some below. I guess I'm going for a transitional look.

Love that barncatz! I love the green tile and cabinets, as well as the pattern. If our backsplash were going to go up higher, I would want to do stripes like that for sure, but with our kitchen layout there just aren't any spots like that.

I am also liking the 1/3 offset with the single strips, but I just don't know. I like the other pattern, too. This is really the first kitchen decision I'm having trouble making.

Looking back, the first photo you posted strikes me as closer to the effect of the HGTV kitchen, if you like that. In other words, leaving aside the offset/row details, what they have in common is a wider contrasting band, no? So, are you saying you think the narrow stripes fit your space better?

I remember reading that one of the GW posters color copied her tile and taped the copies to her wall to make sure she liked the effect ( it is a patterned tile). Maybe you could do something similar?

Ooh, very pretty! Good idea about sketching it out on the wall. Ok, one more question and then I need to focus on work for the rest of the week. I really think either pattern would work in our space and look nice. My husband now says that he likes the two bands of three rows each. So, my last question is, does the 1/3 offset work with that? Or stick with the brick pattern/1/2 offset? Here it is.

I think it would be nicer if it was two rows of the tile. As three it's too similar to the subway tile. My in-laws have accent strips like that, I'll see if they can text me a photo. It looks really nice in their kitchen.

I agree that two would look better and you would also have a larger piece of the subway tile showing at the bottom and top.
