Peach Trees 1st Year frost wilted peach tree leaves, what to do?
Comments (4)Thanks for the info fruitnut,jellyman. I did take the garbage bags off first thing in the am before sun came up, as I thought about the leaves/trees cooking. The news here says that 90% of the peach crop in south carolina is gone. I don't know what else I could have done, as the 10-20mph winds during the cold snap here, would and did prevent any heat sources near trees from keeping the air warm. I am watching the 4 peach trees to see if in next month leaves come back, and I will be careful not to overwater them. I pour 5 gallons of water each week on each tree, includes the cheeries and apples. As I said before the apples and cheeries are fine, as jellyman pointed out, I would have been better just to have not done anything, and not used the garbage bags. Comments (12)When I go to Kroger (or Publix), I make sure I pick the ones that say "Lane" on the label (and it has be #4403 to be the southern ones). They are the best. I have found that the Georgia ones are smaller than the ones from South Carolina (but sweeter to me). As the season progresses, "southern peaches" will be replaced by "eastern peaches" and that means they are from NJ. Not as good. But still better than California peaches which do not travel well and test meal-y. I have had fresh California peaches at a market in California and they are delicious; I don't know why they are so bad once they get here but I refuse to buy them here now....See MoreBest way to freeze fresh peaches
Comments (6)Here's the best guidance. Freezing Peaches or Nectarines Preparation - Select well-ripened fruit and handle carefully to avoid bruising. Sort, wash and peel. Syrup Pack - Use 40 percent syrup. For a better quality product, add 1/2 teaspoon (1500 mg) ascorbic acid per quart of syrup. Put peaches directly into cold syrup in container - starting with 1/2 cup syrup to a pint container. Press fruit down and add syrup to cover, leaving headspace. Place a small piece of crumpled water-resistant paper on top to hold fruit down. Seal and freeze. Sugar Pack - To each quart (1 1/3 pounds) of prepared fruit add 2/3 cup sugar and mix well. Stir gently until sugar is dissolved or let stand for 15 minutes. To retard darkening, sprinkle ascorbic acid dissolved in water over the peaches before adding sugar. Use 1/4 teaspoon (750 mg) ascorbic acid in 3 tablespoons cold water to each quart of fruit. Pack into containers, leaving headspace. Seal and freeze. Crushed or Purée - Coarsely crush peeled and pitted peaches. For purée, press through a sieve or puree in a blender or food processor. (Heating pitted peaches for 4 minutes in just enough water to prevent scorching makes them easier to purée. For better quality, add 1/8 teaspoon (375 mg) ascorbic acid to each quart of fruit. Comments (6)I do what cloud swift does. But dcarch's method of cutting on the "equator" stunned me. I never, ever thought of cutting a peach that way. I always cut from pole to pole, that is, from the stem end to the, um, other end. I will have to try cutting on the equator and see whether it makes a difference. John, if I understand you correctly about the "cheeks," that's how I cut apples when I haven't cored them. I cut the first slice off a side (avoiding the core area), and then proceed to cut several other sides. Some are round, and others are more rectangular. Then I take each piece and cut thin slices from it. When I'm done, most of the pieces look "slice-like," and if some don't, who cares! They still taste good.
