Source for fresh Georgia peaches?

I think peaches are in season now, and this year I want to get some fresh ones! Not the ones in grocery stores.

Does anyone know where I can buy a bushel or so? I'm in Canton, GA.

My daughter goes to the neighborhood farmers markets here in Atlanta. But I don't think she has seen any peaches yet, though it is almost time for them.

Just a suggestion, if you have even a small yard, this fall put in a peach tree. They are easy to grow and you can buy standard, dwarf, or even mini. You probably won't get a bushel next year, but it is fun to pick your own, even if your tree doesn't supply all the peaches you need.

Peaches are here at the farm market! There's a peach farm near Warner Robbins and the folks bring peaches from there. Delicious.

Hello all, I'm the person who grows and distributes the Indian ~ Iowa White Freestone Peach mentioned above. Here is some more information about them ~ they need a month in the frig. to stratify, or nature can do it and you'll have baby trees next spring. I grow them both ways, and find that if I have them germinated and in the ground by mid-July they put down enough roots & gain enough height to make it through the harsh winters we have here (in zone 5, but a "severe micro-climate" version). The ones I stratified and planted last year are about two feet tall, and the ones that stratified naturally are a bit over a foot tall. It was a very unusual year, though, with all the flooding, etc. Let me know if you need stratifying tips. I may also have some 2 year old trees to give away later this year. I'm interested in getting as many of these trees planted as possible, it's a species preservation project of mine ~ a legacy I hope to leave. Our trees bear their first fruit 4-5 years from planting the seeds. If they are damaged by animals or mowers, and have 3"-4" left above ground they re-grow multiple trunks and take an extra year to start bearing, but I've never had one die. Here's a quick and easy, very versatile, yummy, fresh peach pie recipe, should you ever want to opt out of a pastry-type pie. A good sumer-friendly, keep the heat out of the kitchen, recipe. -Grainlady FRESH PEACH PIE by Karen Kramp, Ellinwood, Kansas source: The Stafford County Flour Mills Co. Cookbook, Volume 1 Crust: 1/2 c. margarine (I prefer butter.) *1 c. Hudson Cream Short Patent All-Purpose Flour, Unbleached 2 T. sugar Chopped nuts (I use pecans - LOTS) Filling: 1 c. water **1 c. sugar 3 T. cornstarch 3 T. peach gelatin (aka Jell-o powder) 2 peeled, sliced fresh peaches (depends on size of peaches) ***Additional peaches Preheat oven to 350Â°F. While it is warming, melt 1/2 c. of margarine in 9-inch pie pan in oven. Then add flour, and 2 T. sugar. Stir and pat in bottom of pie pan. Sprinkle some chopped nuts, as much as you desire, over top of crust, press in. Bake until light brown, 12-15 minutes. Cool. Cook water, sugar, and cornstarch until thickened. Add peach gelatin (powder). Add 2 sliced peaches to this hot mixture. Cool until lukewarm. Slice more peaches in bottom of cooled crust. Pour glaze over and refrigerate. Top with whipped cream if desired. Grainlady notes: * You can use almost any type of flour in this recipe. I have used unbleached all-purpose, wholegrain spelt, rye, whole white wheat, or a combination. **I use agave nectar instead of sugar, as a natural low-glycemic option to sugar (1/3-1/2 c. agave nectar per 1 c. sugar in filling - depending on the sweetness of the peaches). No-calorie sweeteners will also work for those who wish to avoid sugar. Personally, I think the sugar can easily be reduced by half in this recipe, especially if the peaches are really ripe and sweet. *** I usually use at least 5-6 peaches total and mix all the peaches in the filling. The amount of peaches you use is really up to you. The recipe makes a lot of filling, probably enough for 2 pies, just keep adding however many peaches you would like. - Any type of crust will work for this recipe, so if you have a favorite shortbread type, graham cracker, nut crust, no-gluten pastry or would like to use a no-gluten flour, or traditional pastry crust - any type pre-baked crust - will work fine. - This recipe works with frozen peaches, thawed, just as well as fresh peaches. - I usually make 1/2 a recipe (for the two of us) and use a small (18cm) half-size pie dish, or make individual tart pans. You can just as easily make this recipe in an 8- or 9-inch square pan, or double the ingredients for a 13x9-inch cake pan.

Here's the best guidance. Freezing Peaches or Nectarines Preparation - Select well-ripened fruit and handle carefully to avoid bruising. Sort, wash and peel. Syrup Pack - Use 40 percent syrup. For a better quality product, add 1/2 teaspoon (1500 mg) ascorbic acid per quart of syrup. Put peaches directly into cold syrup in container - starting with 1/2 cup syrup to a pint container. Press fruit down and add syrup to cover, leaving headspace. Place a small piece of crumpled water-resistant paper on top to hold fruit down. Seal and freeze. Sugar Pack - To each quart (1 1/3 pounds) of prepared fruit add 2/3 cup sugar and mix well. Stir gently until sugar is dissolved or let stand for 15 minutes. To retard darkening, sprinkle ascorbic acid dissolved in water over the peaches before adding sugar. Use 1/4 teaspoon (750 mg) ascorbic acid in 3 tablespoons cold water to each quart of fruit. Pack into containers, leaving headspace. Seal and freeze. Crushed or PurÃÂ©e - Coarsely crush peeled and pitted peaches. For purÃÂ©e, press through a sieve or puree in a blender or food processor. (Heating pitted peaches for 4 minutes in just enough water to prevent scorching makes them easier to purÃÂ©e. For better quality, add 1/8 teaspoon (375 mg) ascorbic acid to each quart of fruit. Here's one of my family's favorites - serve it with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream while it's warm and I doubt that you'll get any complaints :-) I also like it because it doesn't make a huge pan full, which in a small family is a bonus. It's from "The Perfect Recipe" by Pam Anderson of Cook's Illustrated fame. She adapted it from Nathalie Dupree. This recipe is great because it's amazingly easy, quick and can be made with almost any fruit, fresh or frozen year round. If using frozen fruit you will need bake it 50 to 60 mins. IQF fruit (individually quick frozen) works, well especially blueberries, rhubarb and sour cherries. The latter two may require a bit more sugar. Avoid frozen peaches and bing cherries. Just snip the bag and pour. Don't thaw it out first. I've made this with apples, pears, (I added cinnamon) peaches and fresh blueberries mixed with strawberries I found strawberries to be too watery.

Thanks. If I'm not mistaken, some of the grocery stores carry local peaches, though I don't know which ones. I suppose I'll check first on the farmers' markets. There's a Cagle's Farmers' Market not far from here.

I'd LOVE to plant a peach tree in the yard this fall, something freestone!

Which farm market? The big one is DeKalb Farmer's Market, but it's miles and miles from here! However, I might be willing to take a long drive to get some fresh ones.

Stopped at the DFM on my way home Friday, but didn't see any local peaches. Kroger advertised GA peaches, but they were very small. Not the type I like.

Yes, I may have to wait a few weeks. I thought peaches became available this month, but my Starks' catalogue lists early peaches as being available in July.

When I go to Kroger (or Publix), I make sure I pick the ones that say "Lane" on the label (and it has be #4403 to be the southern ones). They are the best. I have found that the Georgia ones are smaller than the ones from South Carolina (but sweeter to me). As the season progresses, "southern peaches" will be replaced by "eastern peaches" and that means they are from NJ. Not as good. But still better than California peaches which do not travel well and test meal-y. I have had fresh California peaches at a market in California and they are delicious; I don't know why they are so bad once they get here but I refuse to buy them here now.

Our East Atlanta Farmers Market (it's too far, not far from Dekalb market) has 'em. They bring them from the peach farm near Warner Robbins. They will have peaches until August. The same folks take them to the Peachtree Market on Saturdays and the Cathedral Of St. Phillip on Peachtree Road
I'm sure the State Farmers Market has some as well.

Also check out the Georgia Organics web page. If anyone is attempting organic peaches they will be listed there. Organic peaches are incredibly difficult. The Southeast is just not really a great home for peaches. They dislike humidity.

Jaemor Farms has peaches and white nectarines now. They are on Hwy. 365/985 north of Gainesville. It's a long drive from Atlanta, but if anyone is going to be in the area anyway, it is well worth stopping by. They usually have a great selection of all kinds of veggies and fruits.

Pearsons is where we are getting the peaches from. They've had fresh peaches for a month and will continue with various varieties into August. Their peaches are absolutely delicious, perfectly ripe, and ready now!
