Happy New Year to all my dear hippy friends!
Comments (2)Well... it seems you went from a not so great Christmas with poor weather that hampered your family plans and your greenhouse, to a very nice New Year's Eve with more family stopping in to visit! Things always seem to have a way of working out... and it was a good year... I'll agree with that! Welcome to 2009! I did manage to stay awake well past midnight... Larry and I watched a couple of movies together... and before I knew, it was almost 2:00am! My first surprise of the New Year is Star of Holland... which opened, and doesn't look like Star of Holland! It's way too white with not enough red to be the right variety, but I like this one... whatever it is! I'll try to get a few new photos posted for an identification. In the meantime, I hope everyone can begin the New Year with a smile! So far, the day is dawning with bright sunshine... a good sign if ever there was one!...See MoreSpring is close, my dears
Comments (21)Hello, again, Colleen! That's the one I was talking about. Now...there are 2 that are close in looks. Yours does not seem to have a ridge down the backside of the leaves, so I believe it is xGasteraloe beguinii (some list as 'Beguinii'-but the word should not be Latinized if it's a cultivar/hybrid name). Your blooms are very pale, but that could be from its growing condition or perhaps it will darken up a bit. See link at bottom for example of this one. This one is purported to be (Aloe aristata x Gasteria carinata v. verrucosa) The other I thought it might be (with a ridge on the back of the leaves) is an xGasteraloe (Aloe aristata x Gasteria batesiana-as far as anyone knows). I have a couple of these. Last time I tried to insert a link, it didn't work, EDIT: Okay, the folks here won't allow me to put the link to that other garden forum, so you can do a search yourself... partial url below .com/guides/pf/showimage/148312/ In your search put: Aloe aristata x Gasteria, and it ought to come up I had a link to blooms of one of these a few minutes ago, & now I can't find it. Eeeee...think I need a nap! Hope this helps! ~Rosemarie Here is a link that might be useful: xGasteraloe beguinii...See MoreMy dear friend passed away
Comments (29)I don't deal well with with losses like that, and so I do understand your numbness and send you my condolence. I lost a lot of friends who were in the 30s and 40s, and so by now I am beginning to feel that reaching 60 is adequate, but I know that is wrong. One friend in his 40s died suddenly of a brain aneurysm while I was in the middle of preparing an astrological reading for him. When I noticed that he had a very exact Mars-Uranus conjuction in the 8th House (Death), I called him to set up an appointment to warn him to be careful when he had transits of that conjuction, as it could mean a sudden unexpected death. I only got his voice mail, and then he left a voice mail for me the day before he died. I kept that message for a long time. Anyway, I really feel for your loss. Comments (58)I very much dislike stainless steel. As an accent, it can work well, but I always feel like I'm entering some industrial factory when I run into kitchens whose major appliances are covered in stainless steel. In addition, having had a Cuisinart drip coffee maker for several years now, which is mostly stainless steel (hey, an accent!) it is impossible to get the smudges, fingerprints and whatever else off it. I keep waiting for the thing to die a natural death so I can buy a new one. I prefer black, white, or certain colors (but for colors other than black or white, as others have noted, matching up the appliances is near impossible). My current major appliances are white, and my fridge, which is about five years old, has that yellowing plastic handle for no good reason I can determine. It's been yellowing noticeably for at least two or maybe three years. No sunlight really gets into the room, and I've never cleaned the handle with bleach. I use Simple Green or Method on it. In my upcoming build, I am going with black major appliances. I've had a brand new black microwave for nearly a year now -- it seems to be easy to keep clean, and I plan for it to move with me. The previous one was white, and at age 25 years of service, it had itself gone notably yellow. It did have something of a plastic frame. (I got rid of it partly for that reason, but mostly because I figured after 25 years of service, who knew what it was leaking...) The main problem with paneling major appliances in my view is the added expense that I'd rather put elsewhere into my build. (edit due to adding clarity on old microwave...)
