Jinny that greenhouse is to die for!!! Such high ceilings and I am so jealous of that banana, do you get any? That isn't the one you said you guys built out of old windows is it? It's way too gorgeous to be made of scrap!

Oh, and no bananas yet! :) I just got them last spring, and, overwintered them in the house for the winter. I took them outside for the early part of summer, then moved them to the greenhouse when a few storms kept knocking the containers over. I planted one in the ground.. I wonder if they are really dwarves because they are really tall..lol they both have pups now, but have not flowered. I am patiently waiting. . Lol

I might have to dig them up before the freeze and wrap and store them for the winter..

I too am impressed with you greenhouse and plants.

Jinny I have an obsession with the gros michelle banana. Did you know that bananas are on the verge of extinction? There is some type of fungus that is killing them all... our current commercial variety of banana is only in production right now because our previous commercial variety, the gros michelle basically got wiped out by this fungus. Apparently our current variety, cavendish I think, is a very pale comparison in flavor to the gros michelle. I'm not old enough to remember the gros, I think it got wiped out in the 80s? Anyhoo maybe you could plant one of those too!!!

John are you reading? Maybe you could plant some gros michelle too!

How much heat does your greenhouse retain in winter and summer? Just curious how glass performs.

Hobby, yes, I have heard and read about that variety being on the verge of extinction. I also read that Brazil?? Or another country, (If I remember correctelly) grows a number of different varieties and that they do not have the virus.

The greenhouse retains the heat very well spring through late fall. During the winter, when the sun is out, it heats up pretty quickly, but, as soon as the sun goes down, or on a cold dark day, it is as cold as it is outside. It is unheated , but, it gives me close to three extra months of growing season. The hubby and I plan on building a heated, underground greenhouse next season.

Jinny Lift the seedlings out with the whole root and move them over to a pot of their own. They should do fine. Water from the bottom to protect the trunks from dampoff

,Jinny...My God, when they say 'dwarf', I think they are either lying or joking..lol I too am in love with dwarf bananas and if anyone wants a pup, just let me know...If you think that grew huge in a pot, try putting one in the ground and then digging it up..lol..I see you guys are very created and I have seen some underground greenhouses..Amazing!! Here are a couple pics of mine and I don't mind sharing a pup...I have one true midget that gets no taller than 3 feet! This red one is hard to get or very expensive..A little wind torn with our last storm.

When I cut my Brugs which are so pretty, majestic, easy to care for and smell amazing, I would be willing to share them too.)

Mike, thanks..I think they must of made a mistake when they sent me a couple "Dwarf Brazilian" bananas.. lol To think, when I received them as young little babies just last June! My, they grow fast! Oh, and I also have one in the ground in my gh. It keeps on leafing out and it is growing up into the roof..Sadly it has to come out. I was hoping to get it to flower. But, the plant does has two pups that I need to take off soon.

Mike, wow!! I am just now seeing the pics that went with your post! Beautiful! ! They are all gorgeous, but, that is the first time I have seen a red banana! Boy, she glows! I don't know how you do it! What is the dimension of your gh? You must be so thankful to have it in the winter time.

By the way..It feels so much like fall here. The humid air has been pushed out and now it so dark in the shadows of my yard and under the trees...For some reason, it seems so much like summer and it's so much brighter even towards evening with the humidity in the air..Going to miss it(

Hey jersey..I am just seeing your post..Yes, that tree specifically glows..That is why it's a keeper..It's hard to get them like that. I will be willing to send you a pup if you want one when I dig it up..So easy to care for..

All I do is dig it up, lop off the top to about 6 inches from the ground before hand..Place it in a pot and stick it in my basement with no light at all..It just goes dormant and all you have to do it water it when the pot dries out..Some just stick them in a bright room and keep them growing all winter after they have cut it way back.. Some bring them in as is and stick them in a corner. they don't need much light all winter, that is what I love about them

Mike, I just learned that you can overwinter bananas. That is exiting news. May I have a pup? The only cutting I can offer you is a Brown Turkey fig. Would you like a calamondin seedling? I forgot how old it is. 2 -3 years? It is about 14 inches tall.

They are all to big to ship by mail. Since 3 out of 4 of my express malling arrived dead I am done with shipping

How are you feeling? Back to normal with no pain I hope. I can never take pain meds they make me nauseous, the best I can do is prescription strength motrin(which does work pretty well).

Mike, I love your red bananas, they are so pretty! I also grow bananas; these pups grow like weeds! I wanted to mention that if I ever get another banana, I will buy a VARIAGATED banana.. maybe you should check them out since you like exotic bananas. Have you seen them? They are gorgeous! I have never bought a tree or plant only for its asthetics, nor a tree or a plant in which my family and I have not tasted its fruit before, but for a variegated banana I would make that exception : ) I have not actively made the attempt to find one, but I'll definitely pick one up if I ever come across them here.
