What ? You don't have a microwave in your living room?
Comments (7)I'm not finished :( I'm just done with a project which was keeping things off-kilter. Everything which belongs in the kitchen is now back in the kitchen. All of the rooms have their right belongings in them. Whew! I did tear down the brick wall (and he tore down the soffit and cabinets) separating the kitchen and living room yesterday though, so now I can say the microwave is "back in the living room". Not really, it's all one room now. We only have to tear down the wall (to put in the back door), the wall in-between the master bedroom and utility room, and the "old" bathroom. Then we'll have to put up the closet wall and hallway. It's the getting the projects done standing in the way which is what delays de-construction. Right now, we can't tear down the old bathroom until the new is done. Until the old one is torn down, we can't put in the closets. If can't put in the closets, we can't tear down the wall in-between the utility room and the master bedroom... So seeing any concrete progress, now matter how small, is just wonderful....See MoreDoes your powder room vanity match your kitchen cabs?
Comments (13)Thank you all for your suggestions and pictures. billl - good point about the dust collecting strips - I agree either against the wall or room for cleaning between. enduring - thanks for the link, although I think my architects violated most of the suggestions - they seem to be more form over function - but it's only the powder room - our bathrooms were designed and built in 1939 - so of course they violate most of the suggestions too. Good luck with your reno pricklypearcactus - I'm meeting with the GC and finish carpenter to discuss a built-in. I was thinking if it had 3 drawers and feet instead of the standard cabinet doors, it would look more like furniture even if it is built in. In the case that I go with RH - how do you like the quality? kfhl - thank you so much for pointing out the baseboard issue. I completely forgot that. mydreamhome - it's a renovation, but we're bumping into what was our original attached garage. Unfortunately the plumbing is already installed. But, give that the door hinge is on the opposite side of your hinge, I think you'll never see in the room from the entry - only from the mud room. nini - lovely vanity and I absolutely love the black granite w/white bowl look - but it would end up being the fanciest piece of furniture in our entire house :) Does the black granite show a lot of waterspots?...See MoreWhat "normal" things don't you have-nor want-in your kitchen?
Comments (79)After not having a dishwasher for the first 28years of my life and spending 30+ minutes a day doing dishes (I cook a lot), I have been using my new dishwasher for 2 months and hope to never go without one again!! I am slightly confused about people's comments about the water/ice dispensers in fridges. Most of the standard fridge/freezers we looked at came w/ the dispensers, I feel like saying you don't want them would limit your options and/or cause you to buy a more expensive fridge (like the counter depth ones). Assuming you are getting a new one instead of an older one on craigslist etc. We did a lot of fancy custom things in our kitchen, but since we did a lot DIY we saved a lot of money. Some of the money saving choices we made were vinyl flooring (love this for comfort anyway), partially making our own cabinets, installing everything ourselves, getting a common granite (uba tuba), tiling our backsplash ourselves, and our island pendant lights. Some of our splurges were appliances (mainly- our 48" capital range), cabinet hardware, and lots of drawers, backsplash tile (although the tile we chose was reasonable, it was still more expensive than a painted wall), and stone underneath the island seating. I love seeing the choices different people make while still meeting their budget goals! :-)...See MoreI'd love your input. Of these- which need support & which don't?
Comments (12)In my PNW garden these roses grew well. Bouquet Parfait...nice big shrub Prosperity...threw tall canes which then bend right over Blush Noisette....another tall bush which will flop Abraham Darby.....big, tall bush but could stand alone Dark Desire...those thick canes will never need help. Cream Veranda...makes a medium sized bush Polar Express...another medium sized bush Young Lycidas....he can stand alone, big bush Kosmos Fairy Tale...a flopper but staking won't help Crown Princess Margaretta...more tall canes which could use a stake Mme Issac Periere....she stands alone but some canes need tying in Jubilee Celebration...no problems with this one Jude the Obscure....he needed help to look tidy Pat Austin...she liked to lay her head in the mud so she needs help. I have grown roses on a chainlink fence and I found that I had to plant them at least five feet away from the fence or the canes got twisted when they stuck in the chain link mesh. I pruned the back of the bushes to keep them growing straight the first year. I also kept an eye out the first couple of years to make sure they were not getting into a pretzel shape. Those roses such as Crown Princess, Abraham, Prosperity all need some of the front canes to be tied back. This will make a more attractive hedge instead of roses fighting with each other. Also if you have anything called snow, it won't break down and damage the bushes. Make sure you clean out any thin or frail looking growth at the base, you will need some clearance to fertilize or weed them. I am assuming that you aren't into having your skin shredded and stabbed by rose canes. It certainly will look very attractive in a few years time....See Moremonicakm_gw
