Don't forget ethernet/CAT-5 in your living room!
Comments (6)I addressed this somewhat weakly in a post re speaker wiring. I agree with the conduit and wiring method. Conduit is a little more costly in mat'l & labor and it obviously requires larger holes than the wiring alone. But, as bus_driver inferred, future wire upgrades will be costly and labor intensive without conduit. A fish tape makes the job of running future wires very easy. I am a communications enginerd and wireless certainly has its places. But, squeezing today's multiple wireless systems into a relatively small footprint, coupled with the household mini-solar flare generator (aka microwave), introduces a lot of signal interference. Many systems are changing to operate at different frequencies but there is still the microwave. I also have the issue of aluminum heat distribution plates for my in-floor heating system. The plates reduce my wireless internet signal strength and I lose the signal whenever the microwave runs. I can relocate the wireless modem but that will require additional hardware now that everything is essentially finished. Plugging into one of my hardwired network drops lets me worry about the wireless solution at a later date....See MoreWhy Don't You Use Your Dining Room?
Comments (41)We've been in this house for 26 years and the original kitchen was small and poorly designed with 6 - yep that's right 6 doors or hallway openings. When the 5 of us sat down for meals only the 2 on the end could get up. So we ate in the dining room most nights on a plywood table that DH made until we renovated. Both of us cook and we enjoy having guests so we put on a large addition and at 30 x 18 my kitchen is the largest room in the house and we love it. It mimics our formal dining room with dark cherry cabinets and Oriental rugs on the ceramic. We usually have all our meals there. We've made lighting the candles and saying grace (or a few woods to mark the day's events) a ritual. But there's still nothing like sitting down as a family for meals in the dining room which now has a real table and china cabinet and using the silver and china. There's a different feeling to using the dining room that makes it special. But when we designed our vacation/retirement home in the mts. we made a large great room so it's a combination living - dining- kitchen area....See MoreIf you don't have any windows in your kitchen
Comments (10)I question whether anyone ever really spent a lot time gazing out the window when they did dishes. I tend to think the 'window over the sink' became ubiquitous in the US because if there was a place to put a window, it's a logical place to put one. If one was able to have upper cabinets, why not have them parallel to the lower cabinets? Symmetry. I've seen many photos of kitchens where the upper cabinet run extends straight across over the sink - mainly in homes outside the US. In the late 1940's in Denmark, a man came up with the idea of a dish draining cupboard. The bottom of the cupboard was slatted- like a plate rack - so people could put just washed dishes in it and they would air dry. These cupboards are still produced today. In US, if there is a cabinet over of sink it is likely to be higher up, presumably because US consumers do not like having a cabinet so close to their face when they do dishes? Think about how you use your kitchen - where would the most convenient placement of the sink be for you? As well as the other appliances and elements? If you post a layout of the space you have to work with, including adjacent rooms and dimensions- there are some incredibly talented people on this forum who will help you....See MoreDoes your spouse/ partner have a hobby you don’t care for?
Comments (58)My DH has a variety of hobbies like Astronomy and metaphysics. He reads more than anyone I’ve ever met and loves his gaming time too. Telescopes and binoculars aren’t cheap, but they are his prize possessions. None of it bothers me, I just wish he had more time to indulge in it, especially the astronomy. On the flip side, I crochet and he’s very supportive of that as well. I can’t tell you how many times he’s been willing to make a pit stop at one of my favorite yarn shops so I can browse a bit. I have an ex who would selfishly hog the tv to watch his sports and fish none stop (when the sports weren’t on). I said “see ya” to that! It’s one of the many reason’s that he’s now my ex....See Moreell_in_or
