Bath & Kitchen Tile dilemma

GBel26

I’m in the process of designing a new traditional style home. At the time same I’ve been looking for ideas on tile for the baths (wall & floor) and tile for the kitchen backsplash. (Planning ahead) I’m not concerned about colors now, just styles.

The problem I’m having is that I really don’t like the look of the popular tiles on the market today.

-- I don’t like the look of the mosaics that are popular as kitchen backsplashes (too many grout lines and they make me dizzy looking at them).

-- I don’t like subway tile (I rode the NY subway many years ago and it just reminds me of the smelly, dirty days of the NY subway).

-- I don’t like penny rounds or hex tiles or octagon tiles. My first 1920s house had them and I’m done with that.

The “wood look” tile may be OK for a mudroom floor, but I wouldn’t put it in my bathroom. Kitchen and rest of the floors will be real wood.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance
